Howard Has 7 R.B.I., but Yankees Rally to Win


    PHILADELPHIA, June 20 — There was every reason for the pitcher to fear the
hitter. The hitter, Ryan Howard, had two home runs, which had traveled a total
of 882 feet, and a triple. He had driven in all seven runs for the Philadelphia
Phillies. Now he represented the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the
 ninth inning.

每個投手都有懼怕打者的理由,而Ryan Howard這名打者今天前面轟了兩發共882呎遠的全

壘打,加上一支深遠的三壘安打,一連替費城人灌進7分打點,現在他代表了致勝分,在九局下

半兩出局,上場打擊..

But the man on the mound was no ordinary pitcher. It was Mariano Rivera, who
was winning World Series rings when Howard was still in high school.Rivera
fears no one.

但此時站在投手丘上的投手並不是一般人,他是Mariano Rivera,一個當Howard還在讀高中,

就拿下世界大賽冠軍戒指的投手

"Get him out," Rivera said. "That's it. Get him out. You have to win the game.
 I ain't going to run."

"讓他出局"Mo說,"就是這樣,要讓他出局",必須贏得這場比賽,而我不能丟掉分數

Working his second inning of a game the Yankees badly needed, Rivera took some
 quick advice from the pitching coach, Ron Guidry, who told him not to give
Howard anything good to hit. Rivera buried a cutter on Howard, who swung and
tapped meekly to second to end the game.

當洋基過去需要Mo投兩局的時候,他的表現大都不是很好,他也趕快向投手教練請教,做了調

整,Ron Guidry告訴他不要給Howard任何機會來揮擊,Mo也送出一個卡特球來迎接Howard,結

果他擊出一個二壘方向的滾地球,讓比賽結束在自己手上..

The Yankees, who did not have a lead until the eighth inning, escaped with a
9-7 victory, with contributions from many corners. While Howard was driving in
all the Phillies' runs, eight Yankees had runs batted in and Bernie Williams
had five hits.

洋基直第八局才有領先的機會,這場9-7的勝利,讓他們從連敗的陰影走了出來,靠著每個人

的貢獻,而當Howard把費城人的分數由他一人包辦,而洋基由八名選手共同承擔,也包

括寶尼今天五支五的表現..

The victory snapped a three-game losing streak.

這一場勝利終於終結了洋基的三連敗

"We needed a win any way we could get it," Derek Jeter said. "We played well,
we battled back — we beat Howard. That's all you can do."

"我們需要抓住任何能贏球的可能"吉特說"我們表現的很好,我們持續奮戰,最後也打倒了

Howard,那就是你所能做的.."

If history is a guide, the Yankees probably won the game when the bullpen door
opened before the start of the eighth inning. Out came Arthur Rhodes, a pitcher
the Yankees have thrashed for years.

如果以歷史為殷鑑的話,只要在八局才動用到牛棚的話,通常洋基的勝率都很高,而對Arthur

Rhodes來說,他這些年碰到洋基,大概都是被痛擊的份

Howard's two-run triple off Mike Myers in the seventh inning had just broken a
5-5 tie.But Rhodes started the eighth by allowing an infield single to Williams
and a walk to Miguel Cairo. Melky Cabrera followed with a run-scoring single
before Johnny Damon smashed a two-run triple to center.

Howard在七局從Myers手中敲出追平的兩分打點的三壘安打,但隨後Rhodes八局一開始先被

寶尼敲出內野安打,又保送開羅,小卡布先是來個一分打點安打,交由大門的右外野兩分打點

的三壘安打來清光壘上的隊友..

"I didn't really have a great swing on it,but funny things happen in this game,
" Damon said. "I'll take it. The ball just kept carrying."

"我並沒有掌握到最好的擊球點,而這場比賽也有趣在這"大門說,"當我打到球,球也就一路

飛出去了"

The Yankees led by 8-7, and a single by Jeter scored Damon, pushing Rhodes's
career earned run average against the Yankees,including the postseason,to 7.66.
Rivera took care of the rest.

當洋基已經取得8-7領先時,吉特又添上一支,讓大門回來得分,使得Rhodes生涯(包含季後賽ㄎ

)的防禦率達7.66,這一波攻勢也讓Mo可以稍事休息..

Rivera had not pitched since a loss Saturday, and Manager Joe Torre bypassed
Kyle Farnsworth, who threw 33 pitches Monday. After using four others in relief
of Mike Mussina, Torre chose to go with Rivera.

Mo星期六才輸掉一場比賽,而托瑞也讓過火球男,因為他昨天也投了33球,所以在先發投手穆

帥下去之後,也動用了另四名後援,逼不得已選擇讓Mo提早上班

"It's not something I liked doing, but I thought the game was important, and we
have an off-day Thursday," Torre said. "I took my chances."

"我也不喜歡幹這種事,但這場比賽對我們很重要,而且星期四可以休息一天"托瑞說"碰碰運

氣吧"

Rivera worked a 1-2-3 eighth inning, then batted for the first time in the
regular season, striking out on three straight pitches.

Mo一上來先三上三下,接著換他本季第一次打擊,也很快的以三個球換到一張K

That seemed to entertain his teammates, because the plan had been for Rivera to
 stand at the plate and not move. He waved at the first pitch, then swung and
missed twice, looking like a contest winner called in from the stands.

那似乎要感謝他隊友,因為這樣就只要讓他站在本壘,不用作任何移動了,第一球先稍微轉動

了身體,接著又連續揮棒落空兩次,看起來像這場比賽的贏家,替結局在做預告一樣..

"He wasn't supposed to swing," Jeter said, laughing. "I guess he wasn't going
down like that."

"他不應該揮棒的"吉特笑著說"我原本猜他不會被三振掉呢"

Rivera, who had not batted since the 2000 World Series, was not as amused —
"I'm not a hitter, I'm a pitcher," he said.

Mo從2000年的世界大賽後就沒再當打者來逗人開心了-"我是個投手,又不是個打者"Mo說

There was more important work ahead, and when David Dellucci flared a two-out
pinch-hit single to left with one on in the ninth, Howard came up as the
potential winning run

不過還有更重要的工作在前面,當David Dellucci在兩出局後上來代打,敲出左外野的安打,

使得壘上有兩名跑者,並且將輪到可能的致勝分Howard上場

Damon spoke of Howard in glowing terms, calling him a treat for fans to watch.
 Jeter compared him to David Ortiz, the Yankees' American League nemesis. But
they did not want Howard, at 26, to make history. No Phillies player has ever
driven in more than eight runs in a game.

大門談及Howard火熱的手感,稱他為球迷眼中的寶,吉特拿他跟老爹比較,都是洋基在美聯

難以解決的打者,更不想讓他在今天打出第26發全壘打來創下費城人單場超過8分的打點

"I'm just thinking, You're a young kid, you've got plenty of time to get 10
R.B.I. in a game," Damon said. "Just don't do it against us."

"我在想,小孩子還有可能單場10打點"大門說 "但是對上我們,省省吧!!"

Jeter and Rivera said they never thought about that. Rivera said he tried to
get a ground out and this is exactly what he did. To Jeter, the odds were
clearly against Howard's striking again.

吉特跟大門都說他們從來不去想這種事,Mo想讓他打出滾地球,而他也準確的辦到了,對吉特

來說,這個球又一次成功的封鎖了Howard

"It's Mo pitching, man," Jeter said. "Mo doesn't give up too many hard-hit balls
, period, let alone home runs. That's what was going through my mind.It's tough
to face Mo."

"老兄，是Mo在投球耶!!","Mo不會讓他難打的球變成全壘打的,我心裡也是這麼想,對上他

也沒有什麼好球可打"

For Howard, it was certainly tougher than facing Mussina.

對Howard來說,對上Mo比對上穆帥是難纏多了

In his first at-bat against him, with two on in the first inning,Howard reached
the third deck of Citizens Bank Park. Of the many, many homers in the park
since it opened in 2004, none had landed there.

當他在第一局壘上有兩名隊友時,對上他,把球撈到Citizens Bank Park第三層看台那,從

2004開幕戰之後,還沒有球掉到那呢..

"That home run Howard hit would have been out of Yellowstone," Torre said.
"I don't think the ballpark had anything to do with it."

"我想那支全壘打可以飛到黃石公園吧"托瑞說,我不認為這球場還有什麼事不會發生

The Phillies estimated the distance at 461 feet, 40 feet longer than Howard's
next home run, a two-run blast in the fourth to left-center field. That gave
the Phillies a 5-3 lead, and after the Yankees tied the score with runs in the
sixth and seventh, Howard pulled a triple off Myers to make it 7-5.

這支全壘打估算有461呎遠,比HOWARD在第四局的左外野第二發還遠了40呎,那也讓費城人以

5-3領先,隨後洋基雖在6.7局追平比數,但Howars又在Myers手中拉出一支三壘打,反以7-5超

前比數

The rookie T. J. Beam got the last out of the inning, and no one expected him
to be the winner.

而新人豆豆,上演豆豆秀取得最後一個出局數,沒人想到他會是勝利投手

But the Yankees must have been hopeful when Rhodes trotted in from the bullpen.
 When Rivera soon followed, Howard and the Phillies were done.

而洋基一定非常希望Rhodes從牛棚趕快上來,而當Mo也跟著上來時,Howard跟費城人也開始

準備回去了...
