Farnsworth injured in win over Nats
Reliever likely out for weekend with back spasms

WASHINGTON -- The Yankees will likely be without Kyle Farnsworth for the rest
of their weekend series against the Nationals, as the reliever left Friday
night's game with back spasms.

Farnsworth started the eighth inning for New York, getting Jose Vidro to hit
a comebacker to the mound. Farnsworth jumped to field the ball, which he did,
then flipped it underhand to get the out at first base.

After a visit to the mound by trainer Gene Monahan and acting manager Lee
Mazzilli, Farnsworth walked off the field and was replaced by Mariano Rivera.

"I felt it grab and knew it wasn't good," Farnsworth said.

"It sort of locked up when he reached back for that ball," said manager Joe
Torre. "Doctors said it's local; it's not running down his leg or anything.
It's a spasm, but he's probably out of commission for a couple of days."

Farnsworth said his back was stiffening up even more after the game, but he
planned to take some anti-inflammatory medication and undergo treatment over
the next day or two.

"We'll see," the pitcher said. "My back was sore a little bit last year, but
this is more muscular. Hopefully I'll take some medication, get some
treatment and be fine."

Torre was not sure whether the Yankees would bring up another pitcher for the
rest of the weekend, but he planned to speak with general manager Brian
Cashman late Friday night to make that decision.

Scott Proctor pitched two innings on Friday, while Mariano Rivera threw 1 2/3
innings. The Yankees' next five games will be played in National League
ballparks, making it essential to have a deeper bullpen.

"I don't know what we're going to do," Torre said. "We're not going to
disable him, because we don't feel it's going to be a long period of time.
It's not clear-cut at this point in time."

While the choices at Triple-A Columbus appear to be slim, Torre said that
Octavio Dotel would not likely be an option to join the team this weekend.
Dotel is on a rehab assignment, completing his comeback from Tommy John elbow
surgery, and he is expected to join the Yankees in 7-10 days.

"We've invested so much in this young man, and talking to Octavio the other
day, I don't think he's where he wants to be yet," Torre said. "With the type
of surgery he had, we don't want to take that chance.

"We signed him knowing what he had gone through, so I don't think it's the
right thing to do to rush him," Torre added. "If you bring him and he doesn't
feel he's had enough, we're all going to pay for it."

If the Yankees do bring up a pitcher, outfielder Kevin Thompson would be the
likely candidate to be optioned back to Triple-A.

Torre跟Cashman會研究是否要在call up一個投手上來
不過這個投手應該不會是Dotel(預計7-10天歸隊)
另外如果要call up投手上來...會將Thompson放回3A
