Dotel embraces unworn pinstripes

Hurler wants to remain a Yankee having never pitched for club

Octavio Dotel hasn't thrown a single pitch for the New York Yankees,
but the reliever already knows that he wants to remain a Yankee beyond
this season.
Octavio Dotel
Dotel, who is finishing up his rehab from last summer's Tommy John
elbow surgery, should join the Yankees sometime in July.
Pitching for the Mets, Astros and A's during a seven-year big-league
career, Dotel has enjoyed his time with the Yankees more than any
other team, even though he hasn't appeared in a game.
"To be honest, even though I haven't done anything for the Yankees, I
love being a part of this team," Dotel said. "The way that the front
office, the trainers and the coaching staff treat their players, it's
something that you really love to see. It's better than being with any
other team I've been with. I'd love to stay here -- not for one more
year, but for three or four years."
Dotel
Money, money, money
The Yankees inked Dotel to a one-year deal worth $2 million this
winter, even though they knew he would miss the first half of the
season.
Dotel knows that the Yankees rolled the dice by signing him. As
routine as Tommy John elbow surgery has become, it's still a tough
surgery to rebound from. Because of that, Dotel feels a sense of duty
to his new team.
"I feel like I owe them," he said. "They knew my situation, and I knew
my situation, but I feel like I owe them something. I can't wait to
get on the mound and start paying them back."
General manager Brian Cashman actually tried to sign Dotel to a multi
-year deal, much the same as he did with Jon Lieber after he underwent
the same elbow surgery.
Jon Lieber
"Right now, he's an investment for now," Cashman said. "He was only
looking for a one-year deal and that's what he got. Hopefully it will
benefit us both, and when all is said and done, we'll talk about
[a new contract] at a later date."
That, of course, will depend on how well Dotel pitches when he returns.
Before Dotel's injury, he had emerged as one of the top young closers
in the league, saving 36 games for the Astros and A's in 2004. Last
year, Dotel saved seven games for the A's while blowing four
opportunities, and it became clear that there was something wrong with
his arm.
When he learned that he needed Tommy John surgery, he feared the
worst.
"I thought my baseball days were done," Dotel said. "I had no idea
what to expect."
A year of rehab has put him in position to return, though his days as
a closer are gone -- at least for now.
While Dotel has not contributed on the field, his attitude has been a
breath of fresh air in the Yankees' clubhouse. Dotel, who always seems
to have a smile on his face, has had an infectious impact on his
teammates, something that hasn't escaped Cashman.
Cashman
"I love him as a person," Cashman said. "I love what he was when he
was healthy and I hope he can be that again for us."
"I'm glad they like my attitude in here, the way I am as a person,"
Dotel said. "From the first day I walked into the clubhouse in Spring
Training, it's been great. I don't know how many years they want to
keep me here, but as long as it is, I'll love it."
