Big Unit begins three-game set
巨怪首戰先發
New York (56-40) at Texas (51-48), 7:05 p.m. ET

After taking it on the chin in Toronto over the weekend, the Yankees will try
to right the ship against the Rangers in Texas this week.
New York, which has lost four of its last five games, will send Randy Johnson
to the mound, looking for the Big Unit to pick them up with a strong perfor-
mance against Texas.
That wouldn't be an unlikely scenario, as Johnson is 15-5 with a 3.36 ERA in
his career against the Rangers. Johnson's 15 wins are the fourth most among
active pitchers against Texas, trailing only Roger Clemens (18), Bartolo Colon
and Barry Zito (16 each).
RJ生涯面對遊騎兵是15勝5敗,3.36投手自責分率,在現役投手中排名第四。僅落後火箭人
的18勝,Colon和Zito的16勝。
Even Alex Rodriguez, who is hitless in his last 10 at-bats, is looking forward
to the series in Texas, where he played for three seasons. Rodriguez has always
hit well in Arlington, batting .331 with 94 home runs and 248 RBIs in 1,073 at-
bats.
A-Rod在那裡也打得很好。
"It's always good to go there," Rodriguez said. "I don't want to jinx myself,
but I've enjoyed hitting there."
The Yankees are 5-2 against the Rangers this season, having split a four-game
series in the Bronx and swept a three-game set in Arlington.
"It's definitely going to be a lot of fun," said Kevin Millwood, who will start
for Texas. "There will be a lot of people there, but not all are going to be
cheering for us. You understand the Yankees are the Yankees. You deal with it
-- they have fans across the country. But if we start winning, it will get loud
for us."
Johnson has alternated wins and losses over his last eight decisions, but he
has pitched well in six of his last seven starts, going at least six innings
and allowing three runs or less with the exception of his July 2 start against
the Mets.
Johnson's last start came on Wednesday against the Mariners, as he took a tough
3-2 loss after giving up two earned runs over eight innings. Johnson struck out
a season-high 11 batters, though his fastball clocked in around 91-93 mph for
most of the day.
"Early on, when we were looking for things, we were looking for velocity -- and
he was, too," said manager Joe Torre of Johnson's struggles earlier in the year
. "He got to the point where he was checking his velocity, and when it wasn't
where it was, he tried to throw harder, which upsets you mechanically.
"You can't throw harder; it's either there or it isn't," Torre added. "Some
days, he's going to pop you at 96, but you take what comes. Once it appeared
that he was comfortable with that, he pitched a lot better."
New York enters the series in Texas with manageable deficits in both the
American League East and AL Wild Card races, while the Rangers are battling for
first place in the AL West.
After losing three of four in Toronto, the Yankees are counting on their 1-2
punch of Johnson and Mike Mussina to get them back on track.
"We have three important games against Texas, and we have our big guns going,"
Torre said. "We certainly need a pick-me-up from those guys."
"We start a new series and we have Randy going, so we hope he goes out and
pitches well," Derek Jeter said. "We can start another streak. Momentum is only
as good as your next day's starting pitcher."
Pitching matchup
NYY: LHP Randy Johnson (10-8, 4.88 ERA)
The Big Unit has thrown quality starts in seven of his last 10 outings. His ERA
over that span is 3.93.
TEX: RHP Kevin Millwood (10-5, 4.61 ERA)
Millwood is 7-1 with a 2.96 ERA on the road this season, but only 3-4 with a
6.59 ERA at Ameriquest Field.
Player to watch
Jason Giambi is 5-for-9 (.555) with two home runs in his career against
Millwood. The Yankees slugger has hit 31 career homers against the Rangers --
his most against any opponent.
