Bombers keep eye on arms

ARLINGTON - While much attention has been paid to the Yankees' pursuit of
an outfielder, the Bombers may be more intent on adding a pitcher before
Monday's non-waiver trade deadline.
Top-line starters such as Dontrelle Willis, Barry Zito or Jason Schmidt won't
end up in pinstripes (or be traded at all, most likely), but the Yanks have
inquired about several mid-level pitchers including Arizona's Miguel Batista
and Baltimore's Rodrigo Lopez, according to sources.
As always, finding a match is difficult. Neither team has been particularly
taken with the prospects the Yankees are willing to offer, and the Yanks are
refusing to part with coveted minor-leaguers Phil Hughes and Jose Tabata.
Still, one baseball source said he gets the feeling that the Yanks - for all
the discussions about Bobby Abreu, Alfonso Soriano and Reggie Sanders - may
be more than willing to go forward without adding another bat. Pitching, on
the other hand, seems to be a greater concern.
"Are they really expecting to get much from (Sidney) Ponson? Or (Shawn) Chacon?
" said one executive. "That seems to be a bigger need than getting a right
fielder."
Melky Cabrera's spirited play has a lot to do with the Yanks' improved
feelings about their outfield. Cabrera, who finished a home run shy of the
cycle in Monday's victory over the Rangers, batted leadoff for the second
straight game last night because Johnny Damon is out with a back strain.
Cabrera entered the day with eight his in his last 22at-bats, 15 in his last
40 before going 0-for-5 last night and seems to be playing with confidence.
The Yanks are also encouraged by how their injured outfielders are rehabbing.
Hideki Matsui is still recovering from a broken left wrist but targets the
end of August for a return, while Gary Sheffield, also recovering from a
wrist injury, hopes to play again shortly thereafter.
That's why pitching may be more at the forefront of the Yanks' minds. A deal
for Lopez seems more unlikely, particularly since it's less common for teams
to trade within their division. Batista, who is 9-5 with a 4.58 ERA with the
Diamondbacks this year, isn't being openly shopped, but the Yanks have been
interested in him for some time.
