Big-Bucks Pitchers Are Often Big Busts

When Oakland’s Barry Zito stepped to the mound in the All-Star Game on
Tuesday and pitched a perfect inning, Scott Boras, his new agent, must have
been smiling.

But general managers should be wary — paying top dollar for pitchers rarely
pays off. The largest contract ever given to a pitcher went to the Rockies’
Mike Hampton, and the results were not pretty. Hampton, who signed for $121
million over eight years in 2001, went a combined 21-28 in two seasons and
performed so poorly that he was traded.

isn’t close to that. Zito is an excellent pitcher in large part due to his
durability, but to compare him to Greg Maddux is silly.”

Large contracts are not without their success stories. Randy Johnson, already
on his way to a possible Hall of Fame career, signed with the Arizona
Diamondbacks in 1999 for $53 million over four years and improved over his
previous seasons, leading the team to a World Series title in 2001.

voting in all but one season of the contract.

become more rare because fewer teams are giving huge deals to pitchers, in
part because of injury concerns. Phillips says changes in insurance have
added to the danger of spending big on pitching.

Boras has been a lightning rod of controversy, but the affiliation may not
hurt Zito. It did not seem to hurt Millwood.

“Millwood would not have gotten the contract he did if Boras was not his
agent,” Neyer said. “Everyone knew Millwood wasn’t a great pitcher, but it

be evaluated. But in an ominous sign, both Millwood and Burnett have spent
time on the disabled list this season.
