July 17, 2006 -- THE STANDINGS tell you the Yankees still trail the Red Sox by
a half-game in the AL East and the White Sox by three games in the wild-card,
and the calendar tells you that there is still more than 21/2 months of
baseball left before we can draw any kind of reasonable conclusions about this
season.

But the eyes are starting to tell a different story. Eyes that have followed
the Yankees the past few weeks, eyes that saw the way they schooled the White
Sox yesterday at the Stadium, they understand that the Yankees are playing
about as efficiently, about as focused, about as smart, and about as well as
a baseball team can play right now.

That doesn't get them any healthier. It doesn't make their pitching staff any

beneficiary of Rodriguez' munificence.

enough, often enough, you're going to be just fine.
