TORONTO -- It wasn't a game-winning homer or even a huge clutch hit
that lifted the Yankees to a win on Saturday afternoon.
No, Derek Jeter's bases-loaded walk may not have been the most
exciting way to get the jobdone, but it brought home the winning
run in the seventh inning, as the Yankees snapped a three-game
losing streak with a 5-4 win over the Blue Jays.
Chien-Ming Wang earned his 11th win of the season, tying
Mike Mussina for the team lead in victories. Wang didn't have
his best stuff, but his six innings of four-run ball proved to
be enough.
Bernie Williams homered and scored a pair of runs, while Jeter
and Jason Giambi each drove in a run.
With one out in the second, Jorge Posada tripled for the first time
in more than four years, giving the Yankees their first scoring
opportunity of the game. Williams took advantage of it, drilling a
two-run homer, his seventh, over the left-field wall to put New York
ahead, 2-0.
Aaron Hill singled in a run in the bottom of the inning, cutting the
lead in half. Eric Hinske tied it up in the fourth with a solo shot
off Wang, his ninth. Lyle Overbay gave Toronto its first lead of the
game in the fifth, doubling in two runs against Wang with a big
two-out hit.
The Yankees pulled within a run in the sixth, as Lilly balked with
runners at the corners, allowing Johnny Damon to score.
Lilly was pulled after six innings, charged with three runs on four
hits and two walks. The left-hander struck out eight.
The Yankees collected singles against Brandon League and Scott Downs
, putting the tying run at second base. Giambi, pinch-hitting for
Nick Green, pulled a one-out RBI double inside the first-base line
against Downs to tie the game.
After an intentional walk to Damon to load the bases, Downs was
taken out for Justin Speier, who struck out Miguel Cairo for the
second out. But Jeter worked a walk against Speier, forcing Cabrera
home to give the Yankees a 5-4 lead. Alex Rodriguez struck out to end
the inning, his fourth punchout of the day.
Scott Proctor pitched the seventh, overcoming a one-out double by
Frank Catalanotto by striking out Vernon Wells and Troy Glaus,
getting the final out on a 98 mph fastball that froze Glaus for a
called third strike.
Kyle Farnsworth struck out the side in the eighth, hitting 101 mph on
the radar gun. Mariano Rivera closed out the game with a scoreless
ninth, earning his 23rd save.
