TORONTO -- Joe Torre made a few adjustments to his lineup on Saturday, sitting
Jason Giambi and using Alex Rodriguez in the designated hitter spot against
Toronto.

Giving Giambi a day off was an easy decision, as he is mired in a 2-for-19
slump and is just 2-for-13 with eight strikeouts in his career against Blue
Jays starter Ted Lilly.

Giambi pinch-hit for Nick Green in the seventh, doubling in the tying run as

"I knew I was going to be in this game sooner or later," Giambi said. "I just
wanted to take a good at-bat and hit the ball hard. I enjoy being in those

Rodriguez had made five errors at third base in his last five games, but Torre
said that the decision to give him the day off from playing the field had

A-Rod has been putting in a lot of extra work on the field, including a
fielding session at 11 a.m. on Saturday with Larry Bowa, so Torre wanted to

Rodriguez didn't fare well in the DH role, going 0-for-4 with four strikeouts.

Entering Saturday, Giambi was hitting just .183 in July, though he had homered
four times and driven in 14 runs. He said he has expanded his strike zone at
times in an effort to get runs in and take some of the pressure off of A-Rod.
"That's what happens when you're in the middle of the lineup and trying to
knock in runs," Torre said. "It's OK if you can do it. It's a good mind-set,
but if it doesn't work, you're not able to do what you intended to do."

there with the best in the American League. He ranks fourth in the AL in homers

"The shift has definitely sucked up a lot of hits this year," Giambi said.

though it meant losing the DH spot by putting A-Rod in at third base.
With that in mind, Torre opted to use a pinch-runner for Giambi. That is hardly
news.

move happen." Wright didn't stay on the basepaths for long, as Johnny Damon
grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.

Tampa tidbits: Octavio Dotel's MRI revealed "nothing unusual" with his
surgically repaired elbow, according to Torre, but the Yankees will wait for
Dr. James Andrews to clear Dotel before letting the pitcher resume his rehab.
Dotel complained of soreness after his rehab appearance on Thursday, then
visited with team physician Dr. Stuart Hershon on Friday, undergoing the MRI
exam. Dotel is 13 months removed from Tommy John surgery on his right elbow.
"We still have to keep reminding ourselves of the severity of his surgery,"
Torre said. "I still think we'll get him back."

"It's tough to say how much he'll need," Torre said, "He's never been idle for
this long."

Torre said that Ponson, who starts Sunday, had three flights canceled due to
weather problems, and the flight he finally took was delayed. He got to the
Yankees' hotel around 4 a.m. Saturday.
