Yankees' patience at plate pays off
Bombers work 13 walks off Sox pitchers in Saturday win

BOSTON -- It was quieter than usual at Fenway Park on Saturday. You believed
that you could hear the sound of the New York Yankees grinding out those
at-bats.

The Yankees' reputation for patience and selectivity at the plate reached new
heights of relevance Saturday as they diligently worked for, and gratefully
accepted, 13 walks from the Boston Red Sox.

These walks were the centerpieces of a 13-5 victory for the Yankees, a
victory that meant they had already won the current five-game series and had
taken a season-high 4 1/2-game lead in the American League East.

The Yanks have taken the base on balls to new heights of productivity in this
series. In the three games they have drawn 27 walks and 16 of those have
scored. Saturday, eight of the 13 walks turned into runs.

Saturday's Boston starter, Josh Beckett, allowed a career-high nine walks.
And in the sixth, the Yankees turned a 5-5 game into a 10-5 game, using the
walk as their basic means of attack. They scored five runs, all after two
were out, all on just two hits. Alex Rodriguez drove in a run with a walk,
as did Robinson Cano. No question, the big moment was Jorge Posada's
bases-loaded triple, but this rally was built around four walks, three by
Beckett, one by his successor, Manny Delcarmen.

The Yankees entered play on Saturday ranking second to Boston in the American
League in both on-base percentage and walks. The teams have similar offensive
approaches, but the Yankees' approach has been the winning one in this
series. That patient approach has been greatly enhanced by the trade for
Bobby Abreu, who entered the game with a stunning .494 on-base percentage
since becoming a Yankee.

The argument could be made that all these walks were not simply the work of
Yankees patience and diligence, but also of Red Sox pitchers with serious
control issues. The Yankees were candid enough to acknowledge the
combination.

"We've got some guys who are capable of working some counts, and it's always
good, especially when you're facing a tough starter, because you can get his
pitch count up there," said shortstop Derek Jeter. "Sometimes the pitchers
will struggle with their control. We've got some guys who know the strike
zone, but again, they were a little wild.

"We're not going out of the zone," said Posada. "That says a lot about
today's game and the last two days. We're having some good at-bats, not

The Red Sox have noticed and admired this work.

It is not at all glamorous, but it is tremendously effective.

preached this since Day 1," Torre said. "Big things happen when you think

One day after playing a day-night doubleheader that concluded with the
longest nine-inning game in Major League history, the Yankees, far from
appearing fatigued, brought a totally focused approach to their basic game
plan. They were willing to exercise extreme patience at the plate. That
patience, repeated time and again, led to good things; another explosion of
runs and a third straight victory over the Red Sox in a 28-hour period.
