Pitching edge over Bosox may not last

As Joe Torre has always stressed, this week included, "It's going to come
down to how you pitch." And the Yankees have to like how they stack up there
against the Red Sox, with the past six weeks serving as evidence that Torre's
rotation is stronger and deeper.

Two American League scouts who have watched both teams cautioned yesterday not
 to read much into the last six weeks, in which the Yankees turned a four-game
 deficit into a 1?-game lead because of their strong starting pitching and
Boston's poor pitching.

Both scouts painted a picture in which neither American League East rival has
a significant edge over the other in starting pitching, the most critical
category.

"Pitching is one of those things that's hard to forecast, because it can all
change any given day," a scout from an AL East team said. "They both have
similar staffs, with similar type pitchers, so I don't think I can sit here
and say there is a significant edge."

The statistics since the All-Star break, however, indicate otherwise. Injuries
 and ineffectiveness have forced the Red Sox to use eight different starters,

"Both teams can hit, so it's just a matter of how much control you can have
over their offense, and it's the same thing with us," Torre said. "Starting

A scout who works for a team in the AL Central said Johnson is now your
classic "six-inning pitcher, because he'll give you five or six innings, and
most of the time they'll be fine. And that's OK, because the Yankees' bullpen
can handle that."

Beckett, on the other hand, is hit or miss every time out, the AL East scout
said.

know what's coming. He's going to throw a fastball, and he tends to overthrow
it and it elevates in the strike zone."

Schilling has a 5.95 ERA in his last eight starts, which the AL East scout
thinks is a result of being asked to carry too much of the load early in the
