Rain postpones Yanks-Tigers opener
Wang to start first game of day-night doubleheader Wednesday

NEW YORK -- A day after getting their first off-day since Aug. 7,
the Yankees will get some more time off.

Tuesday's Yankees-Tigers game at 7 p.m. ET has been postponed because
of rain and will be played on Wednesday as part of a day-night twinbill.

Tickets for Tuesday's game can be used without exchange for Wednesday's
1:05 p.m. ET game. They can also be exchanged for any remaining 2006
regular-season game at Yankee Stadium or for any game up to one year from
Tuesday, subject to availability.

Tuesday's scheduled Yankees starter Chien-Ming Wang will pitch in the
first game, and Jaret Wright has been moved up from Thursday to start
the second game. Randy Johnson was originally penciled into Wednesday's
spot.

Manager Joe Torre made the switch, because he wants Wang and Johnson on
different days to maintain as normal of a flow as possible in the
rotation. He also wants Jorge Posada to catch both Wang and Johnson and
doesn't want to use him in both games of a doubleheader.

"They won't be pitching on the same day five days from now so somebody's
going to have to be pushed back then anyway," Torre said. "There's not
really one main reason. There's just a number of things that we
[thought of] to make that decision."

Torre said he wouldn't have made the decision to push Johnson back,
unless the Big Unit understood and was comfortable with it, which he was.

Even though players and coaches tend to loathe playing doubleheaders,
Torre seemed relieved that the game was postponed.

"The worst thing you want to see is play, stop, play, stop, play, stop,"
he said. "If that outfield, for both teams, happens to get dangerous,
you can get somebody hurt at this point of the season. That would have
been the worst thing. [At] this point in the season, you just have to
take what happens."
