Posada proof a catcher can improve
Veteran is oldest everyday catcher in American League

NEW YORK -- Jorge Posada turns 35 on Thursday, making him the oldest everyday
catcher in the American League.

But while traditional baseball wisdom says a catcher's performance tails off
in his 30s, Posada has proven otherwise. Actually, he's proven a catcher can
improve.

Tony Pena isn't one of those traditionalists. He knows what it takes to catch
when your knees hurt on a daily basis. He caught until he was 40, and ranks
fourth all-time in games played at catcher.

So to Pena, Posada's resurgence isn't surprising at all.

"Age has nothing to do with it," Pena said. "If you put any doubt in your
head, then somebody's going to stop you. But Jorge didn't have any doubt that
he could go out and play hurt every day. He's a horse."

There were many Yankees fans who felt it was soon going to be Posada's turn
to be replaced with a newer model. After setting career highs in homers (30)
and RBIs (101) in 2003, Posada's offensive numbers tailed off the past two
years. He fell to 19 homers and 71 RBIs in 2004, and 14 and 58 in 2005.

Yet, the fiery Posada keeps a level head when talking about his naysayers.
Asked what he would say to them, Posada said, "Nothing."

"You can use it as motivation to prove them wrong," said Bernie Williams, who
had plenty of doubters last year as well. "But at the end of the day, if you
have talent, it's going to show up. And Jorge has plenty of talent."

Posada has taken on perhaps his largest role of his career this season. With
injuries to RBI robots Gary Sheffield and Hideki Matsui, Posada was
consistently slotted in the No. 5 spot in the lineup. With a staff entering
this season with plenty of question marks, Posada was in charge of being its
leader.

He's done both, hitting .271 with 15 homers (tied for first in the American

three statistics are on pace to top Posada's career average.

Posada has been one of the league's best catchers for the past 10 years, but
he's having one of his finest seasons this year. He has thrown out 37.3

ethic," said Yankees backup catcher Sal Fasano, who is seven days older than
Posada. "For me, that's what separates Jorge from everybody else. You can't

Posada is a throwback.

Posada has a picture and quote from legendary Yankees catcher Thurman Munson
taped inside his locker. It reads:

"Look, I like hitting fourth and I like the good batting average. But what I
do every day behind the plate is a lot more important, because it touches so
many more people and so many more aspects of the game."

Posada has caught 97 of the Yankees' 115 games. Without a very offensive
backup catcher and needing somebody to drive in runs, manager Joe Torre said
Posada has been called on more than the coaches would have liked this
season.

"Jorge has got the understanding that you come here to work every day," Torre

That attitude was the same when Posada first prominently broke into the
Majors in 1997.

Before joining the Yankees this season, Pena heard Posada was a willing
worker, but had developed some bad habits. So the first-base coach worked
hard to forge a strong relationship with his catcher.

Pena approached Posada on the first day of Spring Training to tell him about
the bad habits. He asked Posada to trust him like he trusts his uncle, mother

So after more than a decade of Posada playing on his heels, literally, Pena
mixed things up. He found that Posada sat back on his heels when catching,
slowing down his motion when attempting to throw out baserunners.

"I give all the credit to him that he has been able to work and get better
and throw the bad habits away," Pena said. "It's not easy when you've been

Entering Monday's game against the Angels, Posada was mired in the worst
hitting slump of his career, going 0 for his last 25. It dropped his average
to .265 after being at .287 a week earlier.

Sunday was an especially bad day for Posada. He was 0-for-4 with two
strikeouts and recorded the game's final out on a fly out to left field,
ending a Yankees rally in the bottom of the ninth.

The aggressive Angels were also running all over him, stealing four bases on
Saturday and two on Sunday. And to make matters worse, Chien-Ming Wang

"I'm frustrated," Posada said of the stolen bases. "I'm working on it. I just
need to keep working."

That's all Posada knows -- work.

So when the Yankees catcher broke out of his slump by going 3-for-4 with a
solo home run Monday, Posada attributed it to his time in the batting cage
with hitting coach Don Mattingly.

"It felt good, the whole day -- everything we're doing as a team." Posada
said. "It's important for me to keep focused. The pitchers rely on me, so I
can't let them down."

With the year Posada is having, the only people he's let down are those who
doubted him. And he let his work do the talking.
