It only took Robinson Cano one visit to children to know that he
wanted to become a role model for youths.

It came the first time he visited sick children last year and has
turned into a dedication he has made for his life.

"I remember this little kid," Cano said. "He was really, really sick.
And when he saw me and I told him I played with the Yankees, he was
just so happy and excited. It felt really good."

Cano's community service led Major League Baseball to nominate him for
the 2006 Roberto Clemente Award. The award recognizes the player who
best exemplifies the game of baseball, sportsmanship, community
involvement and the individual's contribution to his team.

The award is named in honor of the former Pirates outfielder whose
spirit and goodwill will always be remembered. Clemente died in a
plane crash while attempting to transport relief supplies to
earthquake-stricken Nicaragua on Dec. 31, 1972. The award will be
presented during the World Series.
這個獎是以選手海盜外野手為名讓他的精神與善行永遠的被世人所記憶。1972

Cano was turned onto the idea of visiting children in hospitals by
former Yankee Ruben Sierra. Cano went on four visits to the Joseph M.
Sanzari Children's Hospital at Hackensack University Medical Center
with Sierra last year, Cano's rookie season.

"He took over that role, telling Melky why it's important to give
back," said Ray Negron, a personal assistant to George Steinbrenner

When Cano was a child, he said he idolized Clemente as a talented
baseball player. But as he's gotten older, Cano has gained a new

"The way he helped the kids and poor people was unbelievable," Cano
said. "I want to do that."

Now the word is getting out about the kind of role model Cano is.
Negron's book entitled "The Boy of Steel" tells a true story about
Cano meeting a child named Michael Steel who was diagnosed with
cancer.

Cano was touched by the boy and invited Steel to be a Yankees batboy
for a day.

"He's the main character in the book so he has to live up to that,"
Negron said. "It's a heavy load but he's handled it like Mickey Mantle
at the plate in the ninth inning."
