Lidle makes bid for October

Cory Lidle thrust himself into the Yankees' postseason plans with a strong
outing in last night's 5-4 win over the Orioles at Yankee Stadium. With the
continuing uncertainty surrounding Randy Johnson, that appears to be good
news for the Yankees.
Lidle allowed three runs, all on solo home runs, in 6 2/3 innings in his
first start since Sept. 13. He had been out with a sore finger, but had
enough feel of his pitches to give up just six hits and one walk and
strike out five.
"Lidle was surprisingly good," manager Joe Torre said. "And by 'surprisingly
good' I mean for how long he was idle."
Torre said Lidle (4-3) is still a candidate to start a postseason game.
It seems more likely that Jaret Wright would get the nod and Lidle will
be the long man out of the bullpen, unless Johnson can't go, in which
case both Wright and Lidle would be needed.
There was nothing new on Johnson yesterday. Torre's plans for the ALDS
still include him, even though the Big Unit will not pitch again in the
regular season because of an achy lower back. Torre hopes 12 days of rest
will have Johnson ready for Game 3 on Oct. 6.
"I think you always keep your fingers crossed when it comes to the health
of your pitchers," Torre said. "I guess you could say they're like
thoroughbred horses. They're champions, but anything can happen at any time."

The Yankees remained tied with Detroit for the best record in baseball

Torre announced the rotation for the rest of the regular season, starting
with tonight: Chien-Ming Wang, Darrell Rasner, Mike Mussina, Jeff Karstens
and Wright.
