After nearly 50 years in baseball and 22 years as one of the most
respected voices in baseball, YES broadcaster Jim Kaat sees his
retirement on Friday as a big deal.

He said he doesn't feel nervous, just surprised -- surprised people

Kaat will throw out the first pitch before Friday's opener between the
Red Sox and Yankees, then broadcast his final game. After that, he
plans to do a lot of golfing around his home in Florida, and drive
around the county in his motorhome with wife Mary Ann.

You can't blame Kaat for wanting to step back from the game; he has
certainly watched his fair share.

Kaat made his debut for the Washington Senators in 1959, and pitched
his final game in 1983 with the Cardinals. He'll end his baseball
career in the place where he got his first career win, April 27, 1960,
in Yankee Stadium.

Kaat said ending his playing days was harder than what he will face
Friday, because he has preparing for his retirement, calling fewer
games each of the past several seasons, including 65 this year for
YES. But that doesn't mean he hasn't valued his time behind the
microphone just as much.
