Phillips is first to make it back from DL By RODERICK BOONE rodboone@lohud.com THE JOURNAL NEWS (Original publication: September 3, 2006) NEW YORK — As their rivals in Boston are seemingly losing a player a dayto injury, the reinforcements are slowly beginning to trickle in for the Yankees. While Mike Mussina is scheduled to pitch Tuesday in Kansas City, and Hideki Matsui and Gary Sheffield appear to be on track for their respective returns, backup infielder Andy Phillips made his yesterday. Phillips was activated off the 15-day disabled list after missing 14 games with a strained rib muscle, He suffered the injury on Aug. 17 against the Baltimore Orioles. He spent time rehabbing at the Yankees' minor-league complex in Tampa, Fla., strengthening his lower back and abdomen. Phillips didn't play in any rehab games but took plenty of live batting practice, saying he could see more pitches that way as opposed to getting maybe three or four at-bats during an actual game. He proclaimed himself 100 percent and said he is looking forward to helping the Yankees try to lock up a playoff spot. "This time of the year is exciting anyway," said Phillips, who didn't see any action against the Twins yesterday. "You're getting there and kind of see the light at the end of the tunnel. It's always fun with the teams we've been playing. And to be here is obviously exciting." The addition of Craig Wilson will cut into Phillips' playing time. Theplan, manager Joe Torre said, is to spot Phillips from time to time and usehim as a defensive replacement late in games since he considers Phillips the best defensive first baseman on the roster. Phillips' return to New York Friday was an adventure. After he was unabletotake his original flight, he had to wait for the next available one, whichwas delayed. He didn't arrive in the city until 9:45 p.m., nearly eight hours after he stepped foot in the airport in Tampa. "(Friday) was an event," Phillips said. "Let's put it that way." Moose call: Instead of Randy Johnson starting Tuesday's game in Kansas City against the Royals on normal rest, it will be Mike Mussina who takes the hill. Mussina, battling a strained right groin, has been on the disabled listsince Aug. 23, missing 11 games. He's been solid this season with a 13-5 record and a 3.61 ERA. Chien-Ming Wang gets the nod in tomorrow's series opener against the Royals, looking for his 17th win, and Randy Johnson will go Wednesday. Around the horn: There's still no firm decision on when Hideki Matsui will begin his rehab assignment, but it appears he will be joining Class AA Trenton tomorrow, and will probably play in a game on Tuesday. ... Mariano Rivera wasn't available again yesterday and won't be for at least two or three days. Kyle Farnsworth, who hasn't pitched since Aug. 27, will likely be the closer until Rivera returns. ... Miguel Cairo, out with a strained hamstring since Aug. 6, is still about a week away from rejoining the team. http://0rz.net/f41Ms -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 61.62.36.87
