Johnson shut down until Game 3

Joe Torre dropped a bit of a bombshell on us after the game, saying Randy
Johnson would skip his last start of the regular season because of a sore
back. He will not pitch until Game 3 of the division series, giving him
12 days off.

Johnson revealed the problem when he met with Torre and Ron Guidry before
the game tonight. Torre was not pleased the Unit waited this long. The
back has been an issue for his last three starts. Torre hates it when
players aren't forthcoming about injuries.

Just a guess, but Randy probably wanted to try and pick up some easy wins
as tries to get to 300. Plus he takes a lot of pride in not missing starts.

Chien-Ming Wang will start Game 1, Mike Mussina Game 2 and Johnson Game 3.
Jaret Wright's performance against the Rays locked up the other spot in the
rotation.

Johnson was already on the team bus by the time we got out of Joe's office.
That led to a mad scramble of reporters tearing down the lower hallway of
Tropicana Field. Johnson did consent to come off the bus and talk to us.
It was very professional of him. Not every player would have done that.

"It's a back spasm. My back has locked up. I chose to make a wise decision,
simple as that" he said. "I wouldn't say it's gotten worse. It hasn't gotten
better. I just want to get healthy right now. ... I'm as confident as I can
be."

Johnson is 43 and has a bad back, that is no surprise considering he had
surgery on his back in 1996. The question now is how effective he can be
in the playoffs. If you're a Yankee fan, the team is better off with Wang
and Mussina getting the first two games.

As for other matters:

* Torre was full of praise for Hideki Matsui and how he is swinging the bat.

* Sheff had no problems at first base and made a nice leaping catch.

* Robbie Cano is now officially second in the AL batting race. He is at .342
and Joe Mauer at .347.

* Mariano Rivera reported no problems after pitching an inning.
