Mattingly's small ball has come up big

Don Mattingly smiled at the question, the kind of grin that says he's been
asked this before. Would winning a World Series as a coach take away any
sting from his title-less career as a player?

As Yankees fans are well aware, Mattingly's 13-season playing career was
dominated by poor timing more than anything. He burst on the scene at the
start of one of the lowest eras of Yankees baseball, and he never made the
postseason until his final year.

Mattingly long ago came to grips with the fact that his career included four
stellar seasons (1984-87) but only five playoff games, the 1995 Division
Series against the Mariners, which Seattle won in its last at-bat.

Now in his third year as hitting coach - and perhaps the Yankees'
manager-in-waiting - Mattingly is enjoying a very successful year, directly

He does not have much firsthand postseason experience, but Mattingly has

And as he sat beside Joe Torre and watched the Yankees lose to the Angels in
the first round last season, Mattingly grew frustrated by his hitters'

"In the playoffs every run is big, and I thought the way we were, we were at
a disadvantage," he said. "So many of the guys were home-run guys, not guys

Mattingly expressed that sentiment to Torre, who agreed.

Once Torre decided to remain with the Yankees, they spoke about stressing the
small-ball approach in spring training. They started right from the first
team meeting, held on the day of the first full-squad workout in February.
Torre told the team about how the coaches planned on stressing bunting,
hitting-and-running, moving guys over, and Mattingly followed from there.

But neither Torre nor Mattingly believes the success this season is just
because of their words in spring training. Adding Johnny Damon has made for a
top of the order that Torre said yesterday reminds him of Chuck Knoblauch and
Derek Jeter on the 1998-2001 Yankees.

Mattingly pointed out that when Hideki Matsui and Gary Sheffield suffered
serious left wrist injuries in May, the Yankees were forced to use a
different offensive style.

"You have to do what your personnel dictates," Mattingly said. "If that's how

The Yankees entered play last night with an on-base percentage of .365, the
best in the American League and 10 points higher than their mark of .355 last
season.

The Yankees had only 183 home runs, far fewer than last season's total of
229. Yet they already had more doubles (289 to 259) and triples (21 to 16)
than they did all of last season.

Even though the Yankees will have to figure out exactly where Matsui,
Sheffield and Melky Cabrera fit in the lineup over these final two weeks,
Mattingly is very confident that the lineup's approach is more suited for the
playoffs than it was a year ago.

These days Mattingly finds himself more excited to come to the ballpark each
day, with another postseason beckoning. It's not the same as being a player,
but he's enjoying himself.

"It's definitely a different feel because you don't have any control,
basically," Mattingly said. "Really, when you get to this time of year, it's
like, either the horses are ready or they're not."

At the same time, Mattingly is also learning on the job, intently watching
how Torre handles each situation. Mattingly reiterated yesterday that he has
decided managing is definitely a job he would like to try someday.

Torre has another year remaining on his three-year, $19.2-million contract
extension, and if he decides to retire - which is no given - Mattingly
figures to be the top in-house candidate.

"I'm definitely learning, learning all the time," Mattingly said. "I learn
from everyone. I learn from watching other teams, watching other managers ...
You've always got to keep learning."
