They'll build Ruth's new house.
Construction company Hochtief AG said yesterday that its U.S. unit
has won the contract to build a new stadium for the New York Yankees.
The Dallas, Texas-based Turner Corp., which is owned by Hochtief,
was selected to build the new 50,800-seat stadium for developer Tishman
Speyer.
It will replace the current Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. The landmark,
which underwent a renovation in the 1970s, will be razed.
In a brief statement, Essen-based Hochtief said the deal was worth
$615 million and construction, which has already begun, is expected to
be finished in time for the 2009 season.
The company said the new stadium would reflect the original, which
was built in 1923, by mirroring the landmark facade and frieze to ring
the roof canopy.
The new field will also be set below street level for easier access
and feature 67 luzury suites. The stadium will also have space for 1,000
standing-room only spectators.
The Yankees currently have the best record in the American League,
at 92-59, and are one victory away from clinching the Eastern Division.
