Another option for the playoff opener, Randy Johnson, got no decision last night despite giving up five runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings. But the Yankees, who are tied with the Mets for the best record in the majors, can fix it so they face a decision on the playoff rotation as soon as tonight. Yesterday's split of a day/night doubleheader against the Boston Red Sox -- a 5-2 loss followed by a 7-5 victory -- means they can clinch the AL East title today with a sweep of another day/night doubleheader and a Toronto loss to Tampa Bay. "I know everybody's pretty beat up and tired," Johnson said, "but it'll all be worth it in the end." Derek Jeter hit safely in both games, extending his hitting streak to 25 games. That is the seventh-longest in team history and longest by a Yankee since 1942, when Joe Gordon had a 29-game hitting streak. Jeter, 2-for-10 on the day, trails Minnesota's Joe Mauer in the AL batting race, .3439 to .3432. Wang and Johnson made another piece of Yankees history by becoming the first pair of 17-game winners to start for the Yankees on the same day since Whitey Ford and Jim Bouton on Sept. 20, 1963. Four of the five runs off Johnson in the nightcap scored on two-out, two-strike hits. Coco Crisp, who had struck out his first three at-bats, roped Johnson's 112th and final pitch just fair down the left-field line for a two-run double that broke a 3-3 tie. "I guess there's a couple of ways of looking at it," Johnson said. "You put yourself in a situation where if you make a pitch you're out of the inning ... and you're not battling to get even or ahead in the count -- you're already ahead in the count -- and now you need to make the quality pitch to get him out. That's what I didn't do. "If there was any positive, I put myself in a situation to get the hitter out because it was a count in my favor." There were some encouraging signs from Johnson: a sharp slider in the early innings, as 97 mph fastball to Wily Mo Pena in the fifth inning and six strikeouts overall. But he also gave up key hits on sliders in the middle innings. "Maybe just stick with the fastball a little bit more, now that the velocity's back up," he said. The Yankees got Johnson (who is 38-4 in September games since 1993) off the hook by tying the game in the bottom of the sixth inning and went ahead as Jason Giambi's RBI double keyed a two-run seventh. Craig Breslow (0-2) took the loss. Scott Proctor (6-4) pitched two scoreless innings for the win, and Kyle Farnsworth earned his fifth save. "Proctor was magnificent," manager Joe Torre said. "That's about as sharp as he's been for a while." In the opener, Wang (17-6) allowed three runs on nine hits (five of them doubles) in five-plus innings. "He's still on course," said Sal Fasano, who caught Wang. "I didn't think he had his good command," Torre said. "And that could be the fact he's a couple of days overdue." Wang was originally scheduled to pitch Thursday, but the threat of rain caused the Yankees to push him back to Friday. That game was rained out. "Sometimes you're too strong," Fasano said. In fact, Wang said his sinker was sinking more than usual. "The ball was moving too much," he said, "going too low." The extra rest, he said, "was not a problem, but today I couldn't find the strike zone." Wang needed 29 pitches in the first inning, when he worked out of a second-and-third, one-out jam. But the high pitch count caught up to him later, as he allowed three runs on four hits in the fourth. Otherwise, Wang dodged in and out of trouble. "I think that's really a really good sign for someone who we've come to count on so often," Torre said, "when it's hard for him, when he has to work at what he's doing, he still manages to keep you in the game." The three runs the Red Sox scored off Wang were enough for Josh Beckett (15-10). In six innings, Beckett walked five but stranded six runners and allowed two runs. The Yankees went 0-for-8 with men in scoring position for the game and left 10 men on base. The two runs came on Robinson Cano's 11th homer, a second-inning shot to center that gave him 42 RBI in 37 games since returning from a strained hamstring. Torre indicated Wang could start the playoff opener in part because of his record at Yankee Stadium. "I trust all three of those guys, whether it's (Mike Mussina), Wang or Randy," Torre said. "I think the only thing right now that you're looking at if we get to the playoffs is the success he's had here. That certainly would have to be a part of the information that you have to use." Over his past 14 Yankee Stadium starts, Wang is 10-2 with a 2.22 ERA. His 2.88 ERA at home is fourth best among AL starters. For Wang, who came out after Mike Lowell doubled to lead off the sixth, yesterday was his shortest start at Yankee Stadium was Sept. 8, 2005, against Tampa Bay. The slow infield probably benefits Wang's sinker, but Wang's only explanation was, "I just feel comfortable." Wang was asked if being named the No. 1 starter in the postseason would be an "honor," but he could not answer until the word was defined for him by a reporter from his native Taiwan. Once he understood, Wang said, "Just get a team win." http://0rz.net/731So (P1) http://0rz.net/fd1Pr (P2) http://0rz.net/4e1SL (P3) -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 140.109.231.95 ※ 編輯: yyhong68 來自: 140.109.231.95 (09/17 21:08) -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 140.109.231.95
