RED SOX 5, YANKEES 2
Strange as it seems, it didn't mean much
Wang a little rusty as Yanks, on verge of clinching, drop Game 1

It's hard to think of Yankees-Red Sox as anything but important, and
there were the usual trappings of a big series at Yankee Stadium yesterday
afternoon. A-list celebrities such as Adam Sandler and Spike Lee were among
the sellout crowd of 55,091 and a very cool B-2 stealth bomber flew over
the stadium before the first pitch.
On the field, though, the first game of the day-night doubleheader was
what it was: hardly important. The Yankees, with an 11 1/2-game lead as
the day began, tried to whittle down their magic number without exerting
too much effort. The Red Sox, their postseason hopes dashed during the
Yankees' five-game sweep in Boston last month, tried to prevent the
Yankees from clinching in front of them this weekend.
Boston's wish was granted, temporarily perhaps, in yesterday's opener.
Chien-Ming Wang was off his game just enough as the Red Sox snapped
the Yankees' winning streak at a season-high six games with a 5-2 win.
The Yankees' magic number to clinch their ninth straight AL East crown
remained at six entering last night's second game; they still could have
eliminated Boston with a win last night and two in today's day-night
twinbill but still would have needed a Toronto loss today to clinch.
Wang (17-6), a potential Game 1 starter in the playoffs, allowed
three runs, nine hits and a walk. Pitching on six days' rest, he
was unable to control his sinker and threw an un-Wang-like 87 pitches
in five-plus innings.
"I didn't think he had his good command," manager Joe Torre said.
"That could be the fact he was a couple of days overdue. He battled
through. Didn't give them a whole lot. Certainly kept us in the game."
With back-to-back day-night doubleheaders, the Yankees will pitch their
top four starters in a two-day span. Because none of them will pitch
again before Friday, that gives Torre the option of lining up his
starters in the order he wants them for the playoffs. So pay careful
attention to the three starters against Tampa Bay next weekend: If
Torre chooses Wang over Randy Johnson or Mike Mussina to pitch Friday,
that could be an indication of his plans for the Division Series.
"I'm not talking about the playoffs," Torre said. "Let's put it this
way: I won't sidestep this whole thing. He, Moose and Randy, as far as
I'm concerned, I trust them all. Emotionally, I trust them; stuff-wise,
obviously, I trust them. If we get to where we have to make that
decision, we'll look at some things that will help us make the decision."
One of those things will be Wang's performance at home; he is 10-3 with
a 2.88 ERA at Yankee Stadium this season. His start had been pushed back
two days, first by the threat of rain Thursday and then by actual rain
Friday. An overabundance of rest can be bad news for sinkerballers,
and he did seem off.
Wang labored to keep the Red Sox off the board for the first three,
pitching around a pair of doubles by David Ortiz, Yankees fans' new
Public Enemy No. 1 after his critical words about Derek Jeter's MVP
candidacy.
Big Papi was serenaded with chants of Jeter's name during his first
two at-bats and extra boos for the later ones. He went 2-for-2 with
three walks, so there's a good chance it didn't bother him too much.
Robinson Cano gave the Yankees a 2-0 lead in the second when he hit a
3-and-2 pitch from Josh Beckett over the right-centerfield wall for a
two-run homer. The Yankees loaded the bases with one out, but Johnny
Damon hit into a double play. The Red Sox scored three times against
Wang in the fourth and added single runs in the seventh and ninth.
The Yankees had 14 baserunners against Beckett (15-10) and four
relievers but went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position.
