Wang keeps cool, tames feisty Tigers

New York — Chien-Ming Wang never flinched, not when Joe Torre named him the
Yankees' Game 1 starter and, more importantly, not when Detroit put up a
three-spot on him the fifth inning last night.
That's Wang.
That's why he's quickly earning the reputation as the coolest player in
pinstripes not named Derek Jeter.
"He seems to never get rattled," said catcher Jorge Posada after an 8-4 win
over Detroit last night. "He just keeps coming, he knows what to do. That's
how it is from him out there all of the time."
The pressure-filled spot of starting Game 1 was supposed to belong to Randy
Johnson. A herniated disc in his back pushed him to Game 3 Friday in Detroit.
It seems hard to believe Johnson could have pitched any better than Wang last
night.
Johnson is 2-7 with a 4.59 ERA in nine career divisional series starts. Wang
gave up one earned run in 6ª innings in his playoff debut in losing to the
Angels in last season's division series. His 6ª innings last night might not
have been as good, however, he earned his first playoff win.
Wang, a 19-game winner this season, gave up a solo home run to former Hudson
Valley Renegade Craig Monroe to lead off the fifth. Placido Polanco and Sean
Casey each had an RBI hit. And that was it.
Wang shut down Detroit from there, retiring the last six batters he faced,
calmly walking off the mound when Torre replaced him with Mike Myers in the
seventh inning.
"My sinker and slider was staying flat early in the game," Wang said softly.
"But I did what I hoped to do out there tonight and I wasn't nervous."
Of course, he wasn't.
