Yanks, Mussina announce two-year deal

Right-hander re-signs with Bombers with $23 million contract

NEW YORK -- The ink on Mike Mussina's new contract with the Yankees has been
dry for about a week, but with the recent Thanksgiving holiday, the Bombers
delayed making the announcement official until Monday.
Rather than pick up a $17 million option on Mussina for 2007, the Yankees
opted for the $1.5 million buyout and brought the right-hander back with a
two-year deal worth $23 million. Some of the money will be deferred for
luxury tax purposes.

Mussina turns 38 next month but remains a key part of the Yankees rotation,
which is expected to include 19-game winner Chien-Ming Wang, veteran Randy
Johnson, who is coming off back surgery, and Carl Pavano, who didn't pitch in
the Majors at all last season because of a myriad of injuries.

Mussina was 15-7 last season with a 3.51 ERA and is 92-53 with the Yankees
since joining he team in 2001 as a free agent.

"I'm really happy that he's going to be back," catcher Jorge Posada said last
week after hearing Moose would be returning for a seventh season. "He's a
perfectionist. He's a professional, and every time he goes out there, you
understand that you have a chance to win."
