Rivera anchors ever-changing relief corps in 2006

NEW YORK -- From the time the Yankees were eliminated in the Division Series
last October, general manager Brian Cashman knew that strengthening New York's
bullpen was the top priority for the offseason.

Unlike several other teams, Cashman didn't have to worry about finding a
closer, as Mariano Rivera enters his 10th season as dominant as ever.

While that turned a good thing, given the market that presented itself to B.J.

After two successful seasons with Tom Gordon serving as Rivera's setup man, the
Yankees were forced to choose between re-signing the 38-year-old right-hander
or look elsewhere for a new eighth-inning specialist.

They chose the latter, inking right-hander Kyle Farnsworth to a three-year,
$17 million contract in early December.

Farnsworth, who will turn 30 in April, went 1-1 with 16 saves for the Tigers
and Braves last season, posting a 2.19 ERA. The flamethrower -- who has hit

opponents to a .180 average in 72 appearances.

Houston advanced to the NL Championship Series.

Tanyon Sturtze, who enters his third season with the Yankees, will assume the
same role he did in 2005, helping bridge the gap from the starting pitchers to

Sturtze went 5-3 with a 4.73 ERA last year, though a tired shoulder slowed him

average while posting a 0.66 ERA. Sturtze pitched in a career-high 64 games,
including one start.

and Ron Villone, who were brought in to help solidify an area in which the
Yankees have struggled to fill over the past few years.

Myers, who signed a two-year contract in December, went 3-1 with a 3.13 ERA in

In 52 games with Seattle, he posted a 2-3 record and 2.45 ERA, holding

back Mike Stanton last season, but he was unable to replicate the success he
had in his first tenure with the Yankees from 1997-2002.

In terms of long relief, it is unclear which pitchers will fill that role, as
the Yanks head to Spring Training with seven starters vying for five spots.
Assuming they are all healthy, the two that do not land a starting slot will
shift to the bullpen, with Jaret Wright and the versatile Aaron Small likely
to fill out the relief corps.

season, holding right-handers to a .217 average.

As the only reliever with Minor League options, Proctor will surely spend a

The wild card in the Yankees' bullpen is Octavio Dotel, who was signed to a
one-year deal shortly before Christmas. Dotel pitched in just 15 games for
Oakland last season before undergoing Tommy John elbow surgery. While he
feels he can be ready for Opening Day, the Yankees believe he'll be available
in late-May or June.

The Yankees also have a prospect in the Minors, J. Brent Cox, who could make

2.60 ERA in 16 games with Class A Tampa after being selected in the second
round of last year's draft.
