Posada returns to Bronx for his ninth tour of duty

NEW YORK -- Faces change in the Bronx on an annual basis, but the one behind
the plate has been the same for almost a decade.

Jorge Posada is returning for a ninth season as the Yankees' starting catcher,
though it is unclear just how many years the veteran has left in that role.

Posada remains one of the better offensive catchers in the American League,
but his production has declined over the past two years. After hitting 30
home runs and driving in 101 runs in 2003, Posada's numbers dropped to 21

slugging percentage also fell from .518 in 2003 to .481 and .430 in the past
two years.

His .262 average last season ranked sixth among AL catchers, while his 19
homers placed him third. He did have more RBIs than all but one other AL
backstop, as Cleveland's Victor Martinez drove in 80 to Posada's 71.

Defensively, Posada's .996 fielding percentage trailed only Chicago's A.J.
Pierzynski, tying him for second in the AL. However, Posada threw out just 30
percent of would-be basestealers, sixth best in the league, as he allowed 90
stolen bases in 129 attempts. Only Martinez and Jason Kendall allowed more.

There has been a lot of speculation that the Yankees will try to limit
Posada's time behind the plate this year due to a clause in his five-year,
$51 million contract.

Posada, who turns 35 in August, is entering the final guaranteed year of that
deal, and he will earn $8 million in 2006. If Posada starts 81 games at

The Yankees are returning seven potential starting pitchers from last year's
team, so Posada will be familiar with the arms he will work with. The one
pitcher with whom Posada will have to get reacquainted with is Randy Johnson,
who worked with backup catcher John Flaherty for most of the regular season in
2005.

Stinnett signed a one-year, $650,000 deal, becoming the eighth backup catcher
on the club since 2000.

Although it appears that the team's preference is to have Posada and Johnson
work together, Stinnett could also see some time behind the plate with the
Big Unit. Stinnett caught 22 of Johnson's starts from 1999-2000 with the

Stinnett underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow in June 2004, but
