Around the Horn: Corner infielders
Yankees' first and third basemen match up with any team

Spring Training camps open, we'll preview a different position.
Today: Corner infielders.

NEW YORK -- A year ago, the Yankees were heading into Spring Training with
uncertainty on the corners of their infield.

Yes, they had five-time All-Star Jason Giambi and eight-time All-Star Alex
Rodriguez -- both former American League MVPs -- manning first and third,
respectively, but the pair were coming off of unusual seasons.

Giambi had battled multiple injuries and ailments in 2004, leading to the

the last four games of the American League Championship Series loss to Boston
didn't do much to quiet his critics.

Now, with Spring Training just a few weeks away, New York has two players at
the corners to rival any duo in the Majors: Giambi and Rodriguez.

Giambi rebounded from his dreadful 2004 and the tumultuous offseason that
followed it with an impressive 2005, batting .271 with 32 home runs and 87
RBIs en route to the AL Comeback Player of the Year award. That he was
hitting .195 with three homers and six RBIs on May 10 makes it even more
amazing.

style, bashing a pair of home runs against the Orioles to begin a month that
would reestablish him as a major offensive force.

Rodriguez and Giambi possess as much power as any corner tandem in the league,

Rodriguez could combine for 85-90 home runs and 250 RBIs.

Defensively, Rodriguez is as good as any third baseman in the league, having
made a seamless transition from shortstop in his first two years at the new
position.

Giambi's defense is lacking in some areas, so Yankees manager Joe Torre will

below average, but his hands are good. His bat usually makes up for any
shortcomings in the field.

Backing up the pair are Andy Phillips and Miguel Cairo, though Phillips is
likely to see more playing time than Cairo.

Phillips, who spent considerable time with the Yankees as a bench player in
2005, will get his share of starts at first when Torre wants to use Giambi as
a designated hitter.

Phillips hit just .150 with one home run and four RBIs in 27 games
(40 at-bats) with New York last season, but he batted .300 with 22 homers and

Cairo, who played with the Yankees in 2004, was brought back to the Bronx to
serve as the backup at second, third and shortstop. Cairo shouldn't expect to
see much time at the hot corner, as Rodriguez has missed eight games over the
last five seasons.
2004年曾打過洋基隊的Cairo又被帶回到Bronx球場擔任二壘三壘和游擊位置的候補
但要在熱門位置看到他的機會應該不大
