Unlike 2005, Yankees have seven hurlers vying to start

NEW YORK -- Shawn Chacon and Aaron Small helped salvage what could have been
a lost season for the Yankees in 2005, posting spectacular -- and entirely
unexpected -- second-half performances to lead New York to an eighth
consecutive American League East title.

Chacon and Small are two of the seven pitchers vying for spots in the
starting rotation, as the Yanks head to Tampa next month with a deep pool of
talented arms -- something Joe Torre didn't have last season.

New York dealt with injuries to almost every starter last season, from Mike

starting pitchers, including nine who made nine or more starts.

In fact, the only member of the rotation not to miss any significant time in

pitched.

The Big Unit will assume the role of staff ace for a second straight year,
hoping to improve on his first season in pinstripes. Johnson's year certainly
wasn't bad, as he went 17-8 with a 3.79 ERA, holding opponents to a .243
average.

But for the five-time Cy Young Award winner, his season was not up to his
standards. History suggests that the first year with the Yankees can be a big
adjustment year, and Johnson clearly wasn't himself in the first half of the
season, going 9-6 with a 4.16 ERA in 19 starts before the All-Star break.

Some mechanical adjustments and familiarity with opposing teams helped
Johnson look more like himself after the break, as he went 8-2 with a 3.31

The biggest question mark surrounding Johnson isn't the velocity on his
fastball or how he'll adjust to working with Jorge Posada now that John
Flaherty is gone. It's simply whether the left-hander, who turned 42 in
September, can continue to stay healthy and dominate at his age.

Age is also quickly becoming a factor for Mussina, who is entering the final
year of his six-year contract. Mussina, who turned 37 in December, has
battled arm injuries over the past two years, and he has fallen short of the
200-inning mark in each of those seasons after topping 200 for nine
consecutive years.

What Mussina has going for him is the wide range of pitches he has in his

he once did, he averaged 7.11 strikeouts per nine innings last year, just
slightly below his 7.17 career average.

past 15 years, making him a tough matchup for any hitter. He throws
everything there is to throw, even working a splitter into his game over the
past two or three years.

Like Johnson, the question hovering over Mussina's head is his ability to
stay healthy and make 35 starts. His elbow problems appear to be behind him,
but the Yankees will certainly keep a close eye on him.

After the two veterans, it's a five-man race for the final three spots in the

Wang was the Yankees' most consistent pitcher in the first half, going 6-3

break with a shoulder injury. It looked like surgery would be necessary for
the 25-year-old, but the team opted to rest him instead, and the problem took
care of itself.

Chacon, who was 1-7 for Colorado before being dealt to the Yankees at the
trade deadline, turned his season -- and possibly his career -- around once
he put on the pinstripes.

The 28-year-old right-hander went 7-3 with a 2.85 ERA in 13 games (12 starts)
for the Yankees, helping make up for injuries to Mussina, Pavano, Wright and
Wang. He also showed some guts in the playoffs, starting a must-win Game 4
against the Angels and allowing just two runs in 6 1/3 innings.

Assuming that Wang and Chacon win spots in the rotation, that leaves Pavano,
Wright and Small for the final spot. The best bet is Pavano, assuming that
his shoulder is back at full strength.

Pavano's first year with the Yankees didn't go as he had hoped it would,
as he went 4-6 with a 4.77 ERA in the first three months before missing the
second half with rotator cuff tendinitis.

A lot was expected of Pavano, who signed a four-year, $39.95 million deal
last winter, but he never seemed comfortable in the Bronx. Whether it was the
pressure or his shoulder, that remains to be seen. But given his massive
contract, the Yankees aren't likely to send him to the bullpen if he's able
to take the ball.

Wright, on the other hand, will probably land in a long-relief role, despite
the three-year, $21 million pact he inked last winter. Wright struggled with
consistency when he did pitch -- which wasn't all that much.

Shoulder problems limited Wright to just 13 starts, as he went 5-5 with a
6.08 ERA in those games. Wright will provide insurance against injury for the
Yankees, and based on last season, that is something they can use.

It almost doesn't seem fair that the reward for a perfect 10-0 season -- all
in the second half -- would be a spot in the bullpen, but that is likely
where Small will be headed come Opening Day.

Small's miraculous run was one of the feel-good stories of the 2005 season,
as the 34-year-old journeyman helped hold things together for the
injury-ravaged staff. Small made 15 appearances for New York, including nine
starts.

Of course, given what Small has gone through during his career, a spot on a
big-league roster is reward enough. Of the starters, Small is the best fit
for a bullpen role, as he has the versatility to pitch short relief, long
relief, make a spot start or fill in for someone in the rotation. He should
remain a valuable asset for New York's staff.

  在牛棚裡他可以是長短中繼 他也是洋基隊值得投資的一員
