Damon, Ming set for home opener

After 45 days of Spring Training and a week-long trip to the West Coast to
start the season, the Yankees are finally headed home.

The Yankees will host the Royals in the Yankee Stadium opener on Tuesday,
looking to build on their big win over the Angels on Sunday afternoon.

"Yankee Stadium is very special most of the time, but Opening Day is pretty
darn special," said manager Joe Torre. "We're anxious to go home. It's been

New York had dropped four straight before beating Bartolo Colon, with the win

the enemy Red Sox, Damon is looking forward to seeing what life is like on
the other side.

"I'm excited about playing in front of the fans who, over the years, have

Alex Rodriguez, who had his own home opener experience two years ago,
believes that Damon will have no problem with the pressure that comes along
with wearing the historic uniform.

"I think Johnny is made for New York," Rodriguez said. "I think he's going
to do great and the fans are really going to welcome him. I think he's a

Chien-Ming Wang gets the start for the Yankees, taking the mound for his
first home opener. Wang allowed four runs (two earned) in 4 2/3 innings in
his first start this year, recording a no-decision against Oakland.

Wang pitched well at home last season, going 5-2 with a 3.55 ERA in 10 games,
nine of them starts. Despite Wang's age and relative inexperience, Torre
doesn't think that he'll have a problem being overwhelmed by the situation.

he would have been able to handle that as easily as he seemed to."

The Yankees beat two former Cy Young winners on the road trip, hammering
Barry Zito and Colon for their two victories. The other four games were
winnable for New York, but the offense couldn't get the timely hit in some
games, while the bullpen and defense had problems in another.

With a team ERA of 3.04, the Yankees have pitched well enough to win, giving

"We just have to get rolling; you can't get too caught up in the first four
or five games of the season," Rodriguez said. "A lot of good things have

NYY: RHP Chien-Ming Wang (0-0, 3.86 ERA)
Wang has never faced the Royals, but he is 3-0 with a 2.67 ERA against AL
Central teams.
KC: RHP Joe Mays, (0-1, 12.46 ERA)
Mays went 0-1 with a 5.54 ERA in two starts against the Yankees in 2005.
Player to watch
Robinson Cano went 5-for-7 (.714) with two doubles and four RBIs against Mays
last season. Cano is one of seven Yankees hitters to hit .300 or better
against Mays.
