In the bustle of a visiting clubhouse on getaway day — a rare
place where a grown man can be seen pulling a rolling suitcase
while clad only in towels — Yankees pitcher Shawn Chacon
dressed quietly Sunday, his locker in the Metrodome close
enough to the postgame spread to see the steam rising off the
beef stroganoff.
Chacon, one of the stars of last season's stretch run, has not
pitched much this season. He lost a turn in Minnesota because
of off-days, and made a token appearance in the Yankees' 9-3
rout of the Twins on Sunday. Chacon faced five batters in
relief of Chien-Ming Wang. He allowed one run on two hits and
walked a batter. That left Chacon with an earned run average of
7.94, almost three times what it was last season with the
Yankees. He was acquired in a trade from Colorado and went 7-3
over the last two months and, along with Aaron Small, helped
save the Yankees' season.
As the Yankees meander through the first month of 2006, winning
only when they pound the ball (they have scored at least nine
runs in each of their six victories) and losing when they do
not (0-6 when scoring five or fewer runs), the rotation remains
in flux behind Randy Johnson and Mike Mussina.
The Yankees are rooting for Wang to settle into the No. 3 slot.
That leaves Chacon and Jaret Wright, one of whom may be traded
when the injured Carl Pavano returns. Wright has a big
contract, so Chacon could be in a tenuous situation going into
his next start Saturday against Baltimore at Yankee Stadium.
"There's a lot riding on it no matter what I'm doing," Chacon
said. "I can be anywhere in the league and there's a lot riding
on the next start. That's how I take it."
Manager Joe Torre and his players insist that their start does
not have the feel of last season's 11-19 stumble, which forced
the Yankees to scramble to overtake the Red Sox for the
American League East title.
"It was a miracle we won the division," Alex Rodriguez said
after Sunday's game. "By the time we got to Boston last year,
we were so deliriously tired because we dug too big a hole. We
don't want to get ourselves in that situation again."
Torre said: "We're going to be as good as our pitching allows
us to be. If we have to fight our way like last year, we have
to do that. But I don't see the same team with the same
personality."
Rodriguez agreed, noting this team has Johnny Damon and a
healthy Jason Giambi, who started last season so feebly at the
plate that Torre batted him eighth for more than a week in May.
"There's a little bit of a different swagger this year,"
Rodriguez said.
But a swagger tends to vanish if the pitching is unreliable.
The Yankees must get big contributions from at least two
starters from the back of their rotation to keep that from
happening, a group that includes Wang, Chacon, Wright, Small
and Pavano. Small is expected to go to the bullpen when he
returns from a strained hamstring, probably next week.
Wang needs more outings like the one Sunday, when he held the
Twins to an earned run in seven innings with a career-high
eight strikeouts. Torre loves Wang's nerve and suggested Sunday
it would not be fair to drop Wright from the rotation after his
poor start Saturday, his first of the season. The Yankees
invested heavily in Wright ($21 million over three years) and
Pavano ($39.95 million over four years), but since joining the
Yankees last season they have combined for 9 victories, 12
losses and 3 trips to the disabled list.
It may be a month before Pavano (right shoulder tendinitis)
returns, so Chacon has time to secure a spot in the rotation.
Pavano threw a bullpen session from the top of the mound Monday
in Tampa, Fla., and General Manager Brian Cashman said Pavano
was at least two weeks from getting in a game. He would need at
least two minor league or extended spring starts before
rejoining the Yankees, Cashman added.
Cashman said Chacon and Wright would be better after they
settled into regular turns behind Johnson, Mussina and Wang.
"Wang was terrific," Cashman said. "I'll take our three
starters the way they're throwing. If we can continue that, it
should be a heck of a run."
