The run was unearned because of an error by Alex Rodriguez, and Mussina was
not about to leave the mound. Manager Joe Torre had already been out once,
and when Mussina saw him trotting up the dugout steps, he held up his hand
and barked, "Get back in there."
Torre laughed and did as he was told.
"I'm fine with that," Torre said. "When I went out there the first time, he
said, 'I'm O.K.' Once he gave up a run, I figured, what's the difference?"
It mattered to Mussina, who struck out Carlos Guillén with his 101st pitch
for the final out. He said he wanted the complete game — the Yankees' first
of nine innings this season — but did not fret much about losing the shutout.
