NEW YORK -- The one thing manager Joe Torre has said since Spring Training,
and even again before Monday's game, is that Andy Phillips' biggest problem
is he can't get enough at-bats.

The Yankees' freakish string of injuries has solved that. And as fast as his
fellow Yankees have been dropping, Phillips has been rising.

而洋基詭異的連續受傷事件為這個問題找到了答案。就像其他洋基的同伴殞落般地快，
Phillips也同樣地起飛。

Despite a slow start to the season, Phillips is now hitting a shade under
.300 and is responsible for starting the onslaught of runs tacked on the Red
 Sox on Monday night.

After back-to-back singles to lead off the bottom of the second inning,
Phillips sent an inside fastball soaring into the left-field bleachers to

was Phillips' third homer in the past four games and sixth of his career.

The seemingly young 29-year-old has hit .467 with 11 RBIs during his past
seven games, during which he has been in the starting lineup. Phillips also
singled home the game-winning run in the Yankees' 5-4 extra-inning win
against the Mets on May 20, something he said was huge for his confidence.

這位娃娃臉的29歲打者在過去七場比賽的先發中，打出了0.467的打擊率，及打下11分

Phillips attributed his recent success to shortening his swing and trying to
not always hit to the opposite field.

"Earlier, I felt like I was fighting my swing so much that I was just trying
to go up there and have success just off competing," Phillips said. "Now it's

Gary Sheffield struggling with a wrist injury of his own and backup
outfielder Bubba Crosby out with a hamstring injury, designated hitter Bernie
Williams has been forced into the outfield.

Couple that with Jason Giambi's recent stomach ailment before Monday's
return, and for the first time in his Yankees career, Phillips has had
multiple routes to the starting lineup. The usual designated hitter played
first base Monday.

As of a month ago, the Yankees didn't have any clear openings for Phillips
to fill. His play to that point didn't help his case much either. As of
May 5, Phillips was hitting just .143 with two RBIs in 28 at-bats. Last
year, he hit .150 in 40 at bats.

這一個月之前，洋基並不會讓Phillips填滿出賽時間，他所扮演的角色對他本身沒有太
大的助益。5/5時，Phillips只在28個打席中打出0.143的打擊率且只有2分打點。去年

"Baseball is crazy. You have one of these [games] and then you have those
times earlier when I felt like I'd never get a hit again," Phillips said.
"It's just about going out there with confidence and competing and seeing
what happens."

The team's vote of confidence in Phillips looked a bit shakier in mid-April
when the Yankees signed first baseman Carlos Pena to a Minor League contract.
Phillips said the signing didn't bother him. As of May 31, it didn't matter.
Pena had a clause in his contract allowing him to be a free agent if he
wasn't called up by the end of May. Needless to say, because of Phillips'
tear, Pena never made it.

四月中當洋基跟一壘手Carlos Pena簽下小聯盟約的時候，這支隊伍看起來似乎對
Phillips不是很有信心。Phillips說這份合約並沒有困擾他。5/31後就不重要了。因為
Pena的合約有一條但書說只要五月末沒被叫上大聯盟他就會成為自由球員。這不用說，
因為Phillips，Pena無法做到。

Now the logical question becomes what to do with the hot-hitting Phillips
once everybody is healthy. And that is certainly a managerial problem Torre
would rather have.

現在邏輯上的問題是當每個人都健康時炙熱的Phillips要做些什麼？這無疑地是Torre
在球員管理上寧可有的問題。(笑)
