In the spring, Brian Cashman says, he and Joe Torre spent a fair amount of
time talking to the Yankee kids, to the guys off the bench. The message,
Cashman says, was the same, from the first time all the players were together
in one room. It was that they better be ready when their chance came. The
example they liked to use, Cashman was saying last night from Tampa while the
Yankee kids were pounding on the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium, was Aaron Small.

A lot of it, Joe Torre would say in his office later, was directed at Melky
Cabrera. This was long after the Yankees finally had beaten the Red Sox,
beaten them up, by a 13-5 score. Torre said that even in Tampa in the spring,
with no real spot for him, they wanted Cabrera to know that his name might
get called again this year, even though he wasn't ready for the big leagues
last year.

Cashman was in Tampa because of baseball's draft. He is involved big with the
draft because he is the most powerful guy in the organization now after
George Steinbrenner. When Cashman picked up the phone last night, the first
thing he asked for was the score. He was told that it was 8-2, Yankees, that
Cabrera had scored all the way from first on a wild pitch in the first inning
and then Andy Phillips, another guy ready when his name got called, had hit a
three-run homer off Josh Beckett in the second as the Yankees were scoring
seven runs and having their biggest inning against the Red Sox since
September of 2001.

The Yankees did not have Derek Jeter in the starting lineup last night, Gary
Sheffield is on the disabled list, Hideki Matsui is long gone. The Yankees
keep winning. They keep scoring, even with Cabrera in left and Miguel Cairo
at short and Phillips at first. Against Boston last night they got an upper
deck home run from a big-ticket star like Jason Giambi, but they got one from
Phillips, too, his third home run in his last seven games.

In the past, the Yankees would have gone out and bought three expensive
outfielders with this many guys down. It is different this season. The
Yankees can still money-whip you, don't worry about that. But they can also
win with Cabrera and Phillips. It makes them more appealing. Cabrera, who
wasn't ready a year ago, now has hit in eight straight games, some of which
he has changed with his speed in the outfield as much as his bat. And his
arm. Phillips, who was supposed to be the regular first baseman all along,
hits the ball hard, with regularity.
過去洋基隊向外買了三位昂貴的外野手 今年不一樣了 洋基仍然可以無顧忌地灑錢

Cashman still spends Steinbrenner's money. Will always spend money. Spent it
on Johnny Damon over the winter, overspent to keep Matsui a Yankee, the
Yankees are still right there at $200 million and around $75 million clear of
the field. But they win these days with Cano, Phillips, Scott Proctor,
Chien-Ming Wang. And Cabrera, who has been more appealing than any of them.
He sure did look lost last year when he got a shot in center against the Red
Sox and misplayed that ball Trot Nixon hit. This year he belongs.

or whatever it was. But I have this theory that the good ones always find a
way. The ones who aren't good enough, they always find excuses. I wasn't
ready. The manager doesn't like me. The hitting coach didn't help me. The
good ones, though, they find a way."

"(Cabrera) had a lot of guys saying a lot of things to him in the spring,"
Joe Torre said. "But he wasn't a deer caught in the headlights anymore. He
was just listening."

Torre keeps reminding everybody that it is only the first week of June, that
any team would miss Matsui and Sheffield. But it is a fact that Torre's
Yankees are 14-9 since Matsui went down. Last night they didn't have Jeter,
who carried them Friday night in Baltimore and then had a big hand in
Saturday's win over the Orioles, too. Didn't matter. Melky Cabrera got them
going with his legs. He hit a two-run double later. Phillips took Beckett out
of the ballpark to left. The Yankees got one in the first and seven in the
second and five in the third. Did that against the Red Sox.

When Melky Cabrera, Yankee left fielder, got to the plate in the bottom of
the fourth, his batting average was up to .302. He was ready this time when
his name was called. So far this is a Yankee season out of left field, in
more ways than one.
