Team erases seven-run deficit to break losing skid

WASHINGTON -- Trailing the Yankees by seven runs in the fifth inning on
Saturday afternoon, the Nationals' dugout was very quiet. Riding a five-game
losing streak, it was tough to fathom a comeback was in the offing.

But on this day, manager Frank Robinson had a feeling that his team would
comeback, because there were 4 1/2 innings to go.

"You don't get it all back at once," Robinson said. "If you are going to give
up in the fifth inning, we might as well not start [the game]."

The Nationals didn't get all the runs back at once, but they had their best
comeback of the season with an 11-9 triumph in front of a sellout crowd of
45,085 at Robert F. Kennedy Stadium.

本季最精采的反攻。
The victory broke the Nationals' five-game losing streak and improved their
record to 31-39. It also was Washington's 11th come-from-behind victory and
only its third win when trailing after seven innings.
這場勝利終止了五連敗，戰績推進至31勝39負。也是第11次從後面追趕最終贏取勝利的比
賽，也是第三次在七局還落後最後卻贏球。
In the eighth, the Nationals were down, 9-8, when Yankees manager Joe Torre put
Mariano Rivera in the game after Scott Proctor allowed a leadoff walk to
Alfonso Soriano and induced Jose Vidro to fly out to center fielder Johnny
Damon.
在八局，國民還以9比8落後，在Proctor保送Soriano以及給Vidro打出高飛球被Damon接殺

To many, Rivera is the best closer in Yankees history, possibly of all-time.
When he enters a game, it's usually lights out. Hardly anybody can touch his
cutter and he's known to break a lot of bats.

Saturday was a different story. Soriano, who has often said that he enjoys
running more than hitting home runs, stole second base on 1-0 pitch with Daryle
Ward at the plate.

With Ward was still at the plate, Soriano took off for third base on a 2-2
pitch and scored the tying run after catcher Jorge Posada threw the ball away
in an attempt to nail Soriano.

"I tried to do the best I can for my team and try to win the game," Soriano
said. "I'm always aggressive on the bases. I'm a little surprised they didn't
get me because they know me."

Ward then walked, and Jose Guillen stepped to the plate. At first, it looked
like Guillen was going to have one of his worst games as a member of the
Nationals. He was hitless in his first three at-bats and was unable to drive in
a crucial run in the fifth with runners in scoring position. It also didn't
help that Guillen was playing with five blisters on his hands.

But he made adjustments against Rivera and lined the ball to right-center field
. RFK is so big that center fielder Johnny Damon and right fielder Bubba Crosby
had trouble getting to the ball as it went all the way to the wall.

Ward, one of the slowest runners on the team, was expected to stop at third
base, but third-base coach Tony Beasley kept waving his arm to come home.

Ward was running out of gas, but as he was chugging toward home, he felt it
might be a close play at the plate. Ward said he had no intentions of sliding
and planned to knock Posada down at the plate. It never came to that, as Ward
scored easily standing up.

"I was looking at Beasley as if he was crazy when he was waving his arms," Ward
said. "Once I passed him, I was saying, 'We are going to have a collision here.
We need this run real bad because this for the win.' But it worked out good. I
had no intentions of sliding. It's nothing personal, but when a team is trying
to beat the Yankees, you have to do what you have to do."

For Guillen, as he reached third base, it was like the world was lifted from
his shoulders as he pumped his first in jubilation.

"I went crazy in my third at-bat, when I left that runner on base," Guillen
said. "There was a lot of stuff that came through my mind. I just walked down
to the tunnel. I didn't even want to come outside. But Soriano did what had to
do, and then things started jumping. When you play the Yankees, it's a
different kind of motivation."

Guillen then scored the 11th run of the game on a Ryan Zimmerman single.
Closer Chad Cordero shut down the Yankees in ninth inning to pick up his 13th save of the season.
Robinson hopes that this comeback win can spark the Nationals into long winning streak.
"I'm happy for those guys out there, because it shows them what can happen in this game," he said. "This is a very nice win today. To comeback against this good ballclub, against one of best closers ever, it's a feel-good win."
Earlier in the game, the Nationals found out the hard way why the Yankees are called the Bronx Bombers. New York hit three home runs in the top of the fifth inning to make it a 9-2 game.
The score was tied at 2 when the Yankees poured it on starter Ramon Ortiz and reliever Saul Rivera.
With Derek Jeter on first base and one out, Alex Rodriguez took Ortiz's 1-0 pitch and hit the ball over the center-field wall for a two-run homer. Ortiz never settled down after that.
Posada followed and hit a home run over the right-field fence.
Robinson Cano then doubled and Melky Cabrera reached on a two-base error by center fielder Marlon Byrd. Robinson took Ortiz out of the game in favor of Saul Rivera, who didn't fare any better. Rivera walked pitcher Shawn Chacon and then allowed a grand slam to Johnny Damon to make it a 9-2 game.
But Washington made it a close game by the seventh inning. In the bottom of the fifth, the Nationals answered back by scoring four runs. Brian Schneider highlighted the scoring with a two-run single off Matt Smith.
For Schneider, the game turned around in that inning.
"If we don't score runs that inning, it's going to be a long day," he said. "We came back and scored some runs. All of a sudden, instead of being a seven-run game, it's a three-run ballgame. Three runs look a lot better than seven runs. For us to do that was huge, because it gave us confidence. We didn't try to do too much. We tried to do one at a time."
The Nationals then made it a one-run game in the bottom of the seventh inning, as Ward hit a solo home run off T.J. Beam and pinch-hitter Robert Fick hit an RBI single off Scott Proctor.
