Durazo Inching His Way Back To The Bigs

Columbus Clippers designated hitter Erubiel Durazo proved once that he had
the talent to play at the Major League level and now he is being forced to do
it again. Durazo, 31, must find what made him such a valuable baseball player
in the big leagues just a short time ago. The DH sat down with
PinstripesPlus.com to discuss his current attempt of a comeback to the big
leagues.

Erubiel Durazo, signed as a minor league free agent in 2006, is searching for
a fresh start in the Yankees’ organization after an abysmal 2005 season with
the Oakland Athletics. It was a time where Durazo saw limited action and a
lack of results due to an injury plagued season.
Last year, he experienced his worst season as a professional with Oakland
hitting a mere .237 with 4 home runs and 16 runs batted in. After being
released by Oakland, Durazo is looking to climb back onto the radar with the
Yankees in 2006.
It’s hard to imagine a player, with the reputation and magnitude of Durazo,
being satisfied at the Triple-A level. However, it is only fair to say that
Durazo has made significant progress since Tommy John surgery was performed
on his elbow in the off-season.
He has worked his way up through the Yankee farm system and is content that
his goal of making it back to the big leagues this season are hardly out of
reach.
Durazo told PinstripesPlus.com, “After having the surgery, I’m just here to
do my job and anything can happen.”
Confidence should not be a problem for Durazo as he has put up consistent
numbers for the majority of his career in the big leagues. His best season
came in 2004 as he combined to hit .321 with 22 home runs and 88 runs batted
in with Oakland.
In 1999 with the Arizona Diamondbacks, he managed to hit .329 in 52 games.
The only exception of production came last season with Oakland and who knows
how effective he would have been had he remained healthy.
Durazo admits that he currently is not the same player that fans saw in 2004.
He believes wholeheartedly that he will get back to that level, however the
organization, as well as fans, must remain patient.
“I need a little bit more time. I don’t know when it will happen but I need
more time for everything to come together,” admitted Durazo.
An injury to the extent of Tommy John’s will usually force a player to get
back to the fundamentals on both sides of the ball. The same can be said for
Durazo. What is so ironic is that usually it is a pitcher who is forced to
deal with an injury of this magnitude.
Nevertheless, the DH is mainly concerned with improving his bat and the
effect his swing has on his elbow. Durazo has been used mainly as a
designated hitter since he’s been in Columbus which explains his mentality
of an offensive approach.
“My swing is something that I need to work on the most. My focus is offense
and what I need to do with the bat,” said Durazo.
Like many proven major leaguers who are forced to the minor leagues as a
result of an injury, Durazo is nowhere near thrilled to be wearing a Clipper
uniform. When asked about his experience thus far in the minor leagues,
Durazo refused to admit such a minor league experience existed.
“My experience is in the big leagues and not in the minor leagues,” said
Durazo.
The Yankees have recalled a significant amount of players to New York this
season from Columbus which is encouraging for Durazo. He makes it known that
playing in the minors is not a pleasant experience and giving the Yankees an
extra bat could be his ticket out of Columbus, provided he gets it together
fairly quick.
Durazo reiterates that he is going to need more time in order to develop into
the player that he once was. However, he says that putting the necessary work
in this season could loom large regarding his status with the Yankees.
“I’ve got to do my job first and then we’ll see what happens,” said
Durazo.
Injuries are simply part of baseball and can sometimes hinder a player’s
career, even in the midst of their prime. Durazo is poised to return to the
big leagues as the same player many remember him just a couple seasons ago.
His injury remains the only difference between the current Durazo and the one
who put up consistent numbers in the majors.
“I was healthy before and I had to have surgery. It’s not something you
want to go through but you have to fight it and come back,” said Durazo.
Columbus hitting Coach Kevin Long firmly believes Durazo has been making
strides since he joined the Clipper roster a couple weeks ago.
“It was a rough first 10 days or so but now he (Durazo) is starting to hit
the ball a lot harder and he’s creating a lot more bat speed,” said Long.
Long has come to the conclusion that Durazo may find himself in New York if
he continues to work. This is especially true since New York has relied
heavily on Columbus this season.
“He is going to be evaluated on more of a week-to-week basis and if he
progresses well, the way they’re pulling people up to New York, you never
know,” said Long.
Players come and go through the Yankees farm system and many feel playing in
the New York organization is unlike any other in all of baseball. Durazo
disagrees.
“It’s baseball. You have to work your way up in any organization. There is
no real difference,” said Durazo.
If Durazo can present the ability to return to the ball player he once was,
the Yankees will be receiving an extra bat that could provide solid depth off
the bench. Andy Phillips has provided stability in his role off the bench and
Durazo, if healthy, could fill the same type of void.
Durazo seems to have the mindset that even if things with the Yankees fail to
work out, he will, in time, possess the ability to contribute to any Major
League club that will provide him an opportunity. Tommy John surgery may be
hindering Durazo’s march to the big leagues but it shouldn’t keep him down
for long.
