The Yankees made a change in their starting rotation for this weekend, as Joe
Torre named Kris Wilson as Sunday's starting pitcher against the Devil Rays in
the final game before the All-Star break.

"Two days ago, I was planning on starting in Indianapolis for Columbus, and now
they tell me I'm starting for the New York Yankees," said Wilson, who was re-
called from Triple-A on Wednesday. "I'm a little surprised, but I'm honored
that they have the confidence in me."

Chacon, who is 0-2 with a 12.11 ERA in four starts since returning from the
disabled list on June 11, will pitch out of the bullpen for the immediate
future.

"I wasn't surprised, but I wouldn't say I was expecting it," Chacon said. "
That's the way it works. You have to pitch well to keep your job. Now I'll go

certainly jump at that. He did a good job for us last year."

Chacon's fate could have been worse, as there had been talk inside the organi-
zation about the right-hander possibly being designated for assignment.

Chacon began the season with a 4-1 record and 3.68 ERA before being struck on
the leg by a batted ball during his May 11 start against the Red Sox. Chacon
pitched on May 16, lasting just 1 1/3 innings before being lifted and eventual-
ly placed on the DL with a left leg hematoma.

He didn't pitch well after returning from the DL, but his attitude was even
worse than his pitching. After being removed from his June 17 start against the
Nationals with one out in the fifth and a 9-6 lead, Chacon told reporters that
he was "definitely disappointed" that Torre didn't let him finish the fifth,
which would have qualified him for a win.

According to a source, Torre ripped into Chacon in the middle of the clubhouse
after the game, a rarity for the manager.

"It was ugly," the source said.

Torre said Thursday that he had no problem with Chacon's attitude, and that the
move to insert Wilson in his slot was purely a baseball issue.

"We've talked about some things, but I think it's strictly baseball," Torre
said.

Some within the organization have questioned Chacon's work ethic, but Torre
believes in letting players do their own thing to get into shape.

enough?'" Torre said. "I put guys on their own here. I have other policemen

As for designating Chacon for assignment, Torre said that he believes the
pitcher still has something to offer the Yankees. After going 7-3 with a 2.85
ERA in the final two months last year for New York, Chacon now has to prove his
worth all over again.

"He still has value as far as I'm concerned," Torre said. "The fact that he
pitched last year under a great deal of pressure and handled it very well,

Torre said that Chacon could regain his starting spot if he can get his stuff
together on the mound, and that's exactly what Chacon plans to do.

"I'm a starting pitcher, not a reliever," Chacon said. "I understand what this
is about. In no way in my mind do I believe this is a permanent thing. It's up

"The way we've done it here, we get the five best we can and we go with it,"
Torre said. "We'll see how that shakes out in the second half. My guess is

While Chacon will have to work his way back into a starting spot, Wilson now
has the opportunity to make himself this year's version of Aaron Small.

rotation," Torre said.
