After the week Alex Rodriguez had, hitting a walkoff home run
Wednesday against the Braves and belting a pair of long balls while
driving in seven runs against the Mets on Sunday, I'm going to go with
an A-Rod-free mailbag this week.

The last edition of the mailbag elicited hundreds of responses, and I
thank you all for your e-mails. But there are other topics to cover
this week, so let's get to them.

I was very surprised not to see Mike Mussina on the All-Star roster. A

doesn't have double digits in the win column, but aren't those stats
All-Star worthy?

Yes, Tom, those stats are certainly All-Star worthy. But I can't
really go crazy about Mussina missing out on the All-Star Game when
other pitchers such as Francisco Liriano, Curt Schilling, Justin
Verlander and Kevin Millwood were also left off the roster.

The biggest problem with the All-Star rosters is that they're simply
not big enough. With each team having to be represented, sometimes
less-deserving players are named to the team to make that happen. Of
course, if they were to expand the rosters to 35 or 40, then the extra
players would likely not play, anyway.
全星星賽名單最大的問題就在於不夠大張。為了讓每支球隊都有代表，有時候一
些比較不值得進但又必須代表該球隊的球員就會讓名單爆炸。當然，如果他們把

There is no perfect system. Part of the fun of the All-Star selections
for me is bickering with other folks about who should or shouldn't
have made it. I would have included Mussina over Mark Buehrle (and
Jason Giambi over Paul Konerko), but Ozzie Guillen earned the right to
choose his own players by winning the World Series last year. Joe
Torre certainly exercised that right enough times, so why not?

I would imagine that finding another corner outfielder and another
starting pitcher would be the two top priorities. Melky Cabrera has
done a fine job in left field, but if the Yanks can land a veteran
outfielder to play right -- or at least share the job with Bernie
Williams -- for the right price, I think they'll do it.

returns, so I don't think that's as much of an issue.

with youth, not aging veterans. Knowing the Yankees' past, I'm sure
I'll be disappointed when he's sent packing and I see him in a few
years dominating in the pros.

Chris, I think the Yankees will do everything they can to hold on to
Hughes, who they see as a mainstay in their rotation for years to
come.

Yes, they have traded several prospects in recent years, but seeing
Brian Cashman hold on to Chien-Ming Wang and Robinson Cano last year,
I think he is serious about keeping some of the organization's young
talent and doing exactly what you want them to do, which is building
for the future.

I don't think either of those two players are anywhere close to being
ready for the Majors just yet. Hughes started the season in Class A
ball and has been at Double-A for just a couple of months, while
Duncan struggled at Triple-A and was demoted back to Double-A, where
he has been hitting well.

Pavano has resumed throwing, as he works his way back from his May
surgery to remove a bone chip from his elbow. He is scheduled to get
up on a mound for the first time since the surgery later this week or
early next week, and the Yankees still say he could return from the
disabled list by mid-August.

As for Matsui and Sheffield, it's still going to be a while. Matsui
has been at Yankee Stadium almost every day working out, running and
throwing. My guess is that he will be back in mid-to-late August.

Sheffield is harder to say, because he hasn't been with the team, so I
