CLEVELAND - Fireworks exploded above the ring of stadium lights and
Chien-Ming Wang frowned as he snatched at the ball in frustration. The spark
for this pyrotechnics show was Todd Hollandsworth's two-run homer and neither
Wang nor the Yankees found any joy in the holiday display.

One night after they exploded for 16 runs against the Mets, the Yanks' only
runs came on a two-run homer by Jason Giambi in the first inning of a 5-2
loss to the Indians.

Yet again, the Yanks were done in by a pitcher whose greatest weapon may have
been anonymity. Jeremy Sowers, a 23-year-old lefthander, joined an
ever-growing list of unfamiliar hurlers who have dominated the Bombers by
allowing two runs and six hits over seven innings to keep the Yanks four games
behind Boston in the AL East.

While Sowers' performance may not have been a total surprise considering the
successes of other unknowns against the Yankees (Scott Baker and Anibal
Sanchez, among others), Wang's outing was disturbingly erratic and short.

He lasted just 5-1/3 innings and gave up five runs on a career-high 11 hits,

Wang watched Franklin Gutierrez double down the left-field line before Joe
Torre emerged from the dugout and pulled him.

That last comment was a none-too-subtle shot at plate umpire C.B. Bucknor,
who frustrated both teams with an erratic interpretation of what was a ball
and what was a strike.

Of course, the Yanks' biggest beef had nothing to do with the strike zone at
all. In the third inning, with a 2-0 lead and runners on second and third
with one out, Bucknor ruled that an inside two-strike pitch to Giambi had
clipped the bottom of his bat and went into catcher Victor Martinez's glove,
meaning Giambi had struck out.

The issue? According to Giambi, he wraps his bottom hand around the end of
the bat so it would be impossible for the ball to hit the bat there. So what
did it hit?

"Hell if I know," Giambi said. "I don't know what he thought or heard."

Gifted an out, Sowers then intentionally walked Alex Rodriguez (1-for-3) and
whiffed Bernie Williams to escape without allowing the Yanks to "knock the
kid over," as A-Rod said.

At 26, Wang isn't much older than Sowers but the Yankees have come to rely on
him "probably more than we should," Torre said, even though the righthander
is only in his second year.

That's why last night's showing was jarring. It seems like whenever the
Yankee bullpen has been taxed recently, Wang has been there to offer a
mini-vacation to the relievers by going deep into the game. He entered last
night's outing having lasted more than seven innings in each of his past five
starts (3-1 in that span) and 10 of 17 this year.

Last night, though, Wang's sinker dove only sporadically and he got into
trouble when he left off-speed pitches up near the hitters' belts. He gave up
three runs in the third on three singles and a booming two-run double from
Martinez, then served up a fat changeup to Hollandsworth that ended up
sailing far beyond the right-field wall.

Unlike many pitchers, Wang did not opt to fly ahead of the team Sunday night,
arriving here with the rest of the Yankees around 4 a.m. But Torre did not
believe fatigue was a factor since Wang - who simply prefers to travel with
his teammates - did not go deep into the game anyway.

Wang's struggles were more about location, according to catcher Kelly Stinnett.

"It's surprising because any time, with his stuff, you feel like you're one
pitch away from being out of the inning," Stinnett said. "You're confident
back there. ... but we just couldn't get it done this time."

Neither could the Yankee hitters, who hit the ball hard off Sowers a few
times - Aaron Boone made two great stops on Melky Cabrera and started a
highlight-reel double play on a smoked Giambi grounder in the eighth - but
came away with little.
