Hughes Will Probably Stay, but Two Prospects May Go

With each game he pitches, it seems, Phil Hughes cements his case to stay
with the Yankees past the July 31 trading deadline. Hughes, 20, has allowed
just one hit in each of his last two starts for Class AA Trenton.

But the Yankees' unwillingness to part with Hughes, their top prospect, does

E.R.A. at Trenton. The Yankees could use them to trade for a pitcher or an
outfielder, but Cashman has found nothing to interest him.

be a fit, but the Yankees seem unlikely to meet the asking price for left
fielder Alfonso Soriano.

CHACON LOOKS TO START If Shawn Chacon starts as scheduled Tuesday, he will
have pitched just twice in the Yankees' previous 19 games. Chacon said he was
staying busy by throwing in the bullpen, but he would rather be taking a
regular turn in the rotation.

list, but he took ground balls and batting practice yesterday and seems
