YANKEES' MIDSEASON REPORT CARD By GEORGE KING July 9, 2006 -- A) MIKE MUSSINA Ten wins and an ERA of 3.24 have saved the Yankees' season. With the back end of the rotation a mess and Randy Johnson's early struggles, Mussina was needed and delivered. A) MARIANO RIVERA Save total isn't as sexy as B.J. Ryan's and Jonathan Papelbon's, but future Hall of Famer is still the best. A) ROBINSON CANO The only thing that went wrong was a hamstring injury that landed him on the DL for the first time in his career. All-Star in second season. A) MIKE MYERS Joe Torre has never had a lefty specialist like Myers, who outside of one miserable outing this past week in Cleveland has been sensational. A) RON VILLONE Acquired to provide versatility to the staff - he has starting experience - Villone appeared in 35 of the first 81 games and posted a 1.99 ERA, all in relief. A) DEREK JETER Will be in contention to win first batting title and was the Yankees' best hitter (.351) with runners in scoring position through 81 games. B+) JORGE POSADA Having a solid all-around season and doing it with a knee injury that won't go away. Overlooking the seven passed balls because his throwing has improved. B+) ALEX RODRIGUEZ Plays with the handicap of being judged against himself. But on sheer numbers, yes, even in the clutch - where he led the team in RBIs (48) in the first half - A-Rod is an A student. However, team-high 13 errors drops his grade. B) CHIEN-MING WANG Had the potential to be the No. 3 starter coming out of spring training and has fit nicely into that niche. B) JASON GIAMBI Club's best power threat across the first half is becoming more comfortable as the DH. Batting average is the only thing keeping him from an A. B) JOHNNY DAMON Scored big points playing with a chipped bone in his right foot. Provided the spark from the leadoff spot and tracks balls in center very well. C+) MELKY CABRERA If he was graded on comparing this year to last season's six-game audition, Cabrera would be an honor student. Has done everything the Yankees could have hoped for filling in for Hideki Matsui. C+) RANDY JOHNSON Ten wins at the break is fine, but when you add in seven losses and a 5.25 ERA, Johnson's first half was average. C) ANDY PHILLIPS Moved in as the regular first baseman in mid-May and has played it well enough to keep Giambi in the DH role. C) SCOTT PROCTOR On May 20, Proctor's ERA was 1.84 in 20 games and he had allowed 19 hits in 29 innings and fanned 24 while walking seven and giving up two homers. After 81 games, of which Proctor worked in 41, the ERA swelled to 4.58 and he served nine homers. C)MIGUEL CAIRO Brought back to provide infield depth and has done that. C) BUBBA CROSBY Was hitting .263 when shelved with hamstring injury in mid-May and has struggled lately when given rare chance to play. C) BERNIE WILLIAMS Now revered by the same fans who wanted him to retire last year, Williams has adapted well to not playing full time. Played in 72 of the first 81 games, which is a lot more than expected. C) JARET WRIGHT Eighty-five hits in 72 1/3 innings isn't good. But he is 5-5 with a 4.23 ERA. Scores points for big heart and work ethic others should take notice of. D) KYLE FARNSWORTH Given $17 million for three years to replace Tom Gordon as Rivera's set-up man. Yankees still looking for help in that role. D) KELLY STINNETT Brought in to back up Posada because the Yankees believed he was the best hitter in that market, Stinnett batted .222 and fanned 26 times in 72 at-bats in the first 81 games. F) SHAWN CHACON Even a 4-1 start was deceiving because his ERA hovered in the mid-fours. Hasn't won since May 6 and missed more than three weeks with a deep shin bruise. In 13 games (11 starts) Chacon was 4-3 with a 6.71 ERA and had given up 66 hits in 53 2/3 innings. Admitted he was "garbage" in his last start. A) JOE TORRE Has kept the Yankees close to the Red Sox without Hideki Matsui and Gary Sheffield. B) BRIAN CASHMAN Resisted the urge to overspend to replace Matsui and Sheffield when it would have been easy to succumb to the pressure of doing something quickly besides seeing if Cabrera can play. He can. Since gaining more control, the GM signed Farnsworth for $17 million and Farnsworth has been a big disappointment. Final grade will depend on the moves he makes before July 31. http://0rz.net/021zu -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 140.109.23.211
