Despite the questions regarding his durability, Hughes is baseball’s
top pitching prospect right now. The 2004 first-round pick has yet to
stumble while being pushed aggressively by the Yankees, establishing
himself as one of the Eastern League’s best pitchers even before he
turned 20 last month. Hughes throws 91-94 mph with movement and his
curveball has come a long way, turning his slider into an afterthought
at times. He also has a changeup that projects as a major league
pitch. The total package could make him a No. 1 starter in time. The
shoulder tendinitis that resulted in Hughes being shut down for a time
in 2005 hasn’t recurred this year. If he avoids arm problems, he
should have a rotation spot in New York as soon as next May or June. A
debut in 2006 can’t be ruled out, but the Yankees have indicated that
they’d prefer to leave him in the minors.

Tabata isn’t turning 18 until next month, so if he was only holding
his own in the South Atlantic League, it’d be quite an
accomplishment. Obviously, he’s doing quite a bit more than that,
though. With more room to fill out, it’s easy to see Tabata becoming
a 35-homer guy. He has a better approach at the plate than most
prospects his age, and it helps that he has such great bat speed that
he can afford to wait longer than most to begin his swing. While it’s
suspected that he’ll eventually move to right field, he could stay in
center if he maintains his speed while adding weight. Should that
happen, the potential is there for him to be a true superstar. He
might get there even as a corner outfielder.

Because the Yankees have been ridiculously aggressive with him, it’s
hard to tell just how much progress Duncan has made. The 2003 first-
round pick opened this year at Columbus, even though he hit just
.235/.326/.408 for Double-A Trenton last season. He struggled
mightily, went on the DL with a strained back and has spent the last
month back in Double-A. It’s obviously where he belongs. Duncan is
now primarily a first baseman after making the long-awaited move from
third this spring. He’ll boast 35-homer power in his prime, but he
might struggle to hit for average. His performance in 2007 will be a
far better indicator of what kind of player he’s going to be than
what he does this year.
