When the Yankees went into extra innings without a clear choice for
whom their first baseman should be, Joe Torre heard numerous voices
volunteering to fill in.
當洋基進入延長賽時卻還搞不清楚一壘手應該由誰來擔任時， Joe Torre 聽到很

He was convinced by Johnny Damon and Jason Giambi. Giambi, who Torre
wanted to keep in the designated hitter spot, fibbed in telling his
manager that Damon had played first once in Oakland.

The truth was Damon hadn't played first since he was 13 years old in
Little League. Damon said he had taken grounders at first only 12
times in his career and twice this season. He considered putting in
some time at first during warm-ups but changed his mind because of
Tuesday's oppressive heat.

But that didn't stop Damon from feeling comfortable to volunteer
Tuesday night. His other choice would have been catching or playing
second base, Torre said.

"I figured they stick a lot of guys over at first base who can't play
it," Damon said, igniting widespread laughter. "Not saying our team,

As fans know, Damon is quite the opposite. He was forced to show his
athleticism in the top of the 11th. After catcher Jorge Posada took a
sharp foul ball off his bare hand, the Yankees called for a pick-off
to likely give their catcher a little more time to shake off the pain.

said with a laugh.

Phillips would have likely had to catch and Damon would have had to
play second. Damon also volunteered to catch earlier in the game.

Damon had a first basemen's mitt that he got three years ago but felt

played in his career, was back in his usual center field spot on

"I loved it," Damon said. "It was a great experience and I'd love to

Cano shut down: Robinson Cano was forced to stop his rehab Tuesday and
did not do any activities again Wednesday. Cano, who has been
rehabbing his injured hamstring in Tampa, Fla., was running the bases
when he felt some pain in the same place rounding third base. It was
at the end of a long rehab session.

"We just want to make sure we don't ignore it," Torre said. "I'm
curious to see how the weekend goes and then we'll work it out."

Cano will resume his usual running, fielding and hitting activities
Thursday and it's still unknown when the All-Star second baseman will
be able to return to the Yankees.

Dotel close: After striking out two hitters and allowing one hit in
one inning with Double-A Trenton on Tuesday night, Octavio Dotel
should only need one more rehab outing before once again joining the
Yankees.

Dotel 加入洋基前應該只需要再一次的復建賽。

Torre said Dotel should make his final rehab appearance Thursday and
is expected to join the Yankees in their next series in Toronto if
everything goes well.

Green light: Even with Alex Rodriguez back in the lineup after not
starting with a toe injury Tuesday, Nick Green was still in the

Miguel Cairo, who has been filling in for the injured Cano, was going
to get the day off anyway but Torre said Green's hitting Tuesday night

Pavano speeding: Frustrated with the slow progress of his

pitching before Wednesday's game and may start throwing breaking balls
soon.

Posada yanked: Posada, who took a hard liner off his bare hand early
following New York's rain delay on early Wednesday morning, was
originally scheduled to start Wednesday afternoon's game but was
pulled just before game time. Posada had a key pinch-hit single to
help the Yankees come from behind to beat the Mariners in Game 2 of
the series.
Posada 遭重擊：週三清晨在洋基因雨停賽後不久 Posada 在無防備的手上挨了一
記強勁界外球，原本預計在週三下午的比賽擔任先發，但在比賽開始前退出比賽
