Torre Feels 'Helpless' As Jays Top Yanks

Joe Torre felt "helpless" and Johnny Damon said the Yankees got their "brains
beat in" by the Blue Jays.

No doubt about it, New York was happy to leave Toronto after another loss
Sunday.

Vernon Wells hit two of Toronto's five homers and the Blue Jays scored eight
times in the third inning of a 13-5 victory over the Yankees, who lost for the
fourth time in five games overall.

Troy Glaus, Eric Hinske and Reed Johnson homered in the third, helping Shaun
Marcum earn his first major league win. Wells and Johnson each had four RBIs

Toronto matched a season high with nine extra-base hits and scored 11 runs on

Sidney Ponson (0-1) struggled in his second start for New York - allowing six
runs, five hits and three walks in 2 1-3 innings.

Ponson hasn't won in nine starts, dating to his stint with St. Louis this

"I really expected something from Sidney today, but it just looked like he
didn't have any command at all," Torre said.

after making five in his previous five starts at third.

Toronto sent 13 batters to the plate and set a club record for runs in a third
inning. The Blue Jays have played well since cutting disgruntled designated
hitter Shea Hillenbrand.

manager John Gibbons said.

Damon thinks the Blue Jays played better because of it.

Chacon in the fifth for his sixth multihomer game this season.

Marcum (1-0) allowed three runs and seven hits in five innings. He struck out
four and walked one.

Marcum replaced Ty Taubenheim in the rotation. Taubenheim is recovering from
an infection in his left foot.

Posada's three-run homer off Marcum gave New York a 3-2 lead in the third, but
Toronto scored eight runs in the bottom half.

Toronto added two in the seventh on Johnson's RBI double and Wells' sacrifice
fly.

Johnson went 3-for-5 and Wells finished 3-for-4.

Wells' only out was a loud one, a shot to the warning track that left fielder
Melky Cabrera had to jump for.

"They just kept going up and swinging the bats at will," Damon said.

Notes:@ Attendance was 42,337. ... The three homers allowed by the Yankees in
the third were the most they've allowed in an inning this season. ... Toronto
scored nine runs in the fourth inning of a victory over Texas on July 17. ...
Five of Ponson's seven outs were strikeouts.
