Deal with Yanks' tricks of trades

Come on, is anybody surprised? The Yankees needed a right fielder, a Bobby
Abreu type, and that's what they went out and got, vowel after vowel. They
wanted another starting pitcher and there he was, in the same gift box,
Cory Lidle.

拜託，難道真的有人對這筆交易感到很意外嗎？洋基需要一名右外野手，一名像 Bobby
Abreu 這樣的右外野手──所以他們就出去外面找，然後就把他給找來了！(不太清楚
vowel after vowel 的意思，不過我猜是在指 Abreu 的名字) 他們需要另外一名先發
投手，然後他──Cory Lidle，就連同Abreu一起包裝在同一個禮物盒裡出現了！

Is it a good deal? Yes.

Mike Mussina, who pitched a beauty in yesterday's 4-2 win over Tampa Bay,
is 37 years old. Johnny Damon, who provided a pair of homers, is 32. Mo
Rivera, who added another save, is 36. Derek Jeter, whose double drove in
the first two runs, is 32. Alex Rodriguez, who struck out three times, is 31.
Abreu is 32, which makes him close to a kid brother on this team. So the
Yankees don't have to change his diapers or worry that he won't get it when
somebody cracks, "Leave the gun, take the canoli."

He's a perfect fit. The right guy at the right time. The Yankees, at this
moment, are at least the wild-card team. The Red Sox must be sweating.

他是個完美的合適人選，在對的時機出現對的人。現在的洋基，至少是支外卡的隊伍，
紅襪現在應該在冒汗了吧！

So, yes, getting Abreu and Lidle from Philadelphia for four guys you never
heard of, none of whom can play guitar, or be of any help in the near future,
is one sweet swap.

所以囉，沒錯，洋基隊就以四名無名小卒──這四個沒有人會彈吉它（喔，是在影射
Zito 還是 Bernie 壓？）或是能夠在近幾年對球隊有任何貢獻──向費城人隊換來了
Abreu 與 Lidle，這的確是一件好交易。

The Yankees have no idea when Hideki Matsui or Gary Sheffield will be back
in pinstripes. September, give or take a few bad guesses. They've waited
long enough to add a significant bat to the wounded lineup that left spring
training expecting to score 1,000 runs.

洋基不知道松井或老薛什麼時候才會歸隊。如果往壞的方面想的話，有可能是九月。
他們已經等著在充滿傷兵名單的先發陣容裡新添一名重砲等了很久了，在春訓時大家
還期望能夠得個1000分呢。

Melky Cabrera, the kid, has done a decent job in left field. And now Damon
will have Abreu on his other side to make the outfield whole again.

What adjustment will Joe Torre make when the first-string outfielders return?
Who knows and not to worry. It's a problem every manager would love to have.

"The Yankees only deal for the present," Torre said after the game. "We made
this move for right now. This is a good situation. We've coveted Abreu for a
long time."

Abreu's ability, his numbers, made him the Phillies' No.3 hitter when Larry
Bowa, the Yankees' third base coach, was managing him. He doesn't consider
Abreu a home run hitter - and this is a guy who smacked at least 20 homers in
his last seven full seasons. His production has fallen off - he's at eight
right now - but Bowa says it is not a bad thing.

Does it bother anybody that the Yankees are spending millions for these two
on top of the gazillions they're already spending? Forget it. Let George have

Abreu will make $4.4 million for the rest of this year and $15 million next
season, when his contract ends. Lidle is a rent-a-pitcher, $1.3 million left
on a contract. Next year? That's a million years away.

Abreu今年下半球季的薪水是440萬，下個球季是1500萬，然後合約就結束。Lidle 是租來
的救急用投手，合約還有130萬。明年呢？再說啦！

But Brian Cashman did say this about Lidle: "The pitcher is a big aspect (of
this deal). I had to have Lidle or this deal doesn't get done."

要是不能夠換來 Lidle，這場交易可能就告吹了。」

Starting pitchers are hard to come by, and the Yankees beat the world to this
one. So maybe you're thinking this trade sounds a little too good. Have a few
more questions:

先發投手實在是可遇不可求，而洋基卻在這場交易給他搞來了，所以如果你覺得這場
交易聽起來太過夢幻，請考慮以下問題：

If these guys were available, and can add so much, why didn't Omar Minaya
get them?

如果這些傢伙等著大家來交易，又能對球隊添上這麼多戰力，那麼為什麼 Omar 不來
搶人呢？

How do we know Abreu and Lidle won't think New York is the ninth circle of
hell?

我們怎麼會知道 Abreu 跟 Lidle 不會覺得紐約是第十八層地獄哩？

What if one, two or three of the four players - "prospects," Cashman kept
calling them - the Yankees sent to Philadelphia ultimately make it into the
Hall of Fame?

假使洋基隊送過去給費城人隊的這四名球員──現金人稱他們做「明日之星」──其中
的一個、兩個、或三個球員在最後終究進入名人堂呢？

The answer is none of that matters. All George and Cash and Torre are
worrying about is the next game, tomorrow night, at the Stadium, Toronto,
7:05 p.m. Plenty of parking.

答案是，這些都不重要。老史、現金人還有托瑞現在擔心的只有下一場比賽，
明天晚上七點零五分，在主場對戰多倫多藍鳥隊，車位現在還很多唷。
