Notes: Cano makes long-awaited return
Matusui making progress; Torre pleased with Wilson's play
By Mark Feinsand / MLB.com
CHICAGO -- The Yankees don't know when they will get Hideki Matsui or
Gary Sheffield back in the lineup, but New York doesn't have to wait
any longer for the return of Robinson Cano.
Cano was activated from the disabled list on Tuesday, starting at
second base and batting seventh. The All-Star second baseman spent
six weeks on the DL with a strained left hamstring, missing 34 games.
"I was surprised, because the doctor had told me it would be 10 days,
" Cano said of his lengthy rehab. "I missed it a lot, man. Especially
when I was watching the games."
For the Yankees, Cano's return adds another solid bat to the lineup,
giving manager Joe Torre a look at what could be his lineup for the
majority of the final two months. Cano was hitting .325 with four
homers and 27 RBIs in 69 games before the injury.
"He's a spot in the lineup I don't have to pinch-hit for," Torre said.
"He seems to feel fine; all indications are that he's 100 percent."
To make room for Cano on the roster, the Yankees placed Miguel Cairo
on 15-day DL, retroactive to Aug. 6, with a strained left hamstring.
Cairo, who suffered the injury on Saturday in Baltimore, will do his
rehab in Tampa, and the Yankees expect him back in September.
"We're very fortunate to get [Cano] back at the same time we lose
Cairo, who did a great job filling in for him," Torre said.
The hamstring problem marked the first time in Cano's short career that
he has been injured, but he knew that rushing back would do little to
help either him or his team.
"It was frustrating, but at the same time, I had to understand that I
just had to get my work done [in Tampa] and get my treatment," Cano
said. "There's always a first time. I just hope it doesn't happen again
this year."
Cano said he hasn't felt any pain or discomfort in the hamstring area
for "a couple of weeks," but he admitted that he still thinks about
the injury when he runs hard.
"It's hard; I don't want to, but every time I have to run, I'm thinking
about it," Cano said. "I felt good at the plate [during his rehab games];
I want to keep feeling the same way up here."
It didn't take long for Cano to feel back at home after returning to
the Yankees' clubhouse. Third-base coach Larry Bowa, who has worked
closely with Cano on his fielding all season, welcomed the youngster
back with some friendly words right away.
"He said, 'How was your vacation,'" Cano said.
The 21 club: Tuesday's game against the White Sox kicked off a stretch
of 21 games in 20 days for the Yankees, who have series against the
Chicago, the LA Angels (twice), Boston (five games), Baltimore and
Seattle in that span.
Torre has no plans to predict how this 21-game marathon will turn out,
choosing instead to approach it on a daily basis.
"I look at it one game at a time," Torre said. "When we get back from
Anaheim [on Aug. 28] and have a day off, we'll look at it and say,
'How did we do?'
"When you try to figure it out, say you'll win these two out of three
or split this series, you wind up being wrong somewhere along the line,
" Torre added. "You need to just win games."
The Yankees open their series in Chicago at 66-42, holding a two-game
lead over Boston in the AL East.
"We're 24 games over .500, and my goal right now is to get 30 games
over," Torre said. "If you're 30 over, you're in a pretty good
neighborhood. If for some reason you don't get to the postseason,
then you're not very lucky, because 30 [over .500] is a very
successful year."
Hideki on the way: Matsui will visit a doctor to have his surgically
repaired left wrist examined again on Friday, at which time he could
be cleared to take full batting practice.
Matsui will be with the Yankees during their homestand next week, then
remain with the club for the remainder of his rehab until he is ready
to play in Minor League games.
"I don't think we can try to pick a date or a week that he's going to
be ready for us," Torre said. "We have to understand that this club now
is the club we're going to go the rest of the year with."
First mate: Torre has liked what he has seen during the past week from
Craig Wilson, who will likely get the bulk of the playing time at first
base for the rest of the season.
That will move Andy Phillips back into his original bench role, which
Torre believes he is equipped to handle.
"He's got a great mental approach to it," Torre said. "He's not going
to sit here and feel sorry for himself."
Torre said it is unfair for the Yankees to expect Phillips to contribute
much offensively in the new role, but his versatility in the infield
will help make up for that.
Setting the starters: The Yankees set their rotation for the next three
weeks, as Cory Lidle will start on Friday night against the Angels and
Jaret Wright will get the ball on Saturday. Chien-Ming Wang and Randy
Johnson will start the final two games against Los Angeles.
That sets up Mike Mussina, Lidle and Wright to face Baltimore, leaving
Wang to open the series in Boston on Aug. 18 in the first game of the
day-night doubleheader.
Dotel on hold: Octavio Dotel pitched another rehab game on Monday, but
Torre said that the right-hander is not ready to join the Yankees just
yet because of his arm strength.
Dotel had been expected to join the Yankees by the All-Star break, but
he has experienced a couple of setbacks during his return from Tommy
John surgery.
"He feels good and thinks he's close to being ready to go," Torre said.
"We feel he needs a little more work. Whoever is watching him has to be
more comfortable."
Coming up: The Yankees and White Sox continue their three-game series on
Wednesday, as Johnson takes on Jon Garland. First pitch is scheduled for
8:05 p.m. ET.
Cano
Torre
Torre
