Rivera to keep sitting BY ROGER RUBIN and ANTHONY McCARRON DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITERS Mariano Rivera remained sidelined with a strained muscle near his right elbow yesterday, and Joe Torre said he probably won't use him today, either. "Let's see if a few days off will relieve some of the discomfort," Torre said. "We'll see about him Monday in Kansas City. ...Right now, we'd like to make him feel as normal as possible." Torre acknowledged that Rivera's arm "doesn't feel normal," but said the area where the pain is has "been tended to recently." Torre compared the problem to one Andy Pettitte pitched through when he was with the Yankees. If the AL East race was closer, Torre said the Yanks would've handled Rivera (5-5, 1.90 ERA, 33 saves) the same way. "You'd have to," Torre said. "It'd be tougher, no question, but knowing it would help him, we'd have to bite the bullet. You have to look at the big picture." Kyle Farnsworth, who hasn't pitched in a week, will serve as the closer today. [Notebook] MOOSE CALL: Mike Mussina's strained right groin has healed to the point where will come off the disabled list on Tuesday and start that night in Kansas City, Torre said. Mussina got hurt on Aug. 20 against the Red Sox, leaving after four innings. Yesterday, Mussina said he felt "fine" and would be ready to pitch. Chien-Ming Wang opens the series tomorrow. Randy Johnson will follow Mussina on Wednesday. "Then we'll look at it and make a decision on Cory (Lidle) and Jaret (Wright) for Friday," Torre said. Whoever doesn't start likely will head to the bullpen because Torre said Wang likely would stay on his regular rest and pitch Saturday. NO RELIEF: Ron Villone insists he's healthy, but the lefthander's numbers have sagged. He was one of the Yankees' most effective pitchers until compiling a 6.04 ERA in 17 games in August. In his first September outing yesterday, he allowed four runs in a third of an inning. He's allowed at least one run in seven of his last eight appearances. THUMB'S UP: Derek Jeter was checked by trainers in the eighth inning when he stepped on his thumb and his glove chasing a ball hit by Michael Cuddyer. Jeter remained in the game. "He's fine," Torre said. "It was a freak thing." Jeter (1-for-2) has a 13-game hitting streak and trails Minnesota's Joe Mauer in the AL batting race, .350 to .343. ... The Yanks activated Andy Phillips from the disabled list. He missed 14games with a strained rib muscle.... Jason Giambi is 0-for-8 since taking a cortisone shot on Thursday for wrist pain and is in an 0-for-13 rut overall. ... Catcher Sal Fasano was hit on the right hand by a foul tip in the first inning but remained in the game until being pinch-hit for in the eighth.
