Pitching to determine Yanks' fate
With roaring offense, competent pitching can win in October
Baseball Perspectives
Mike Bauman
NEW YORK -- Earlier this season there was a distinct feeling that if the New
York Yankees reached the postseason, they wouldn't be playing much October
baseball, anyway, because their pitching could not possibly hold up.
Now that the Yankees' presence in the postseason is virtually assured, their
October pitching prospects don't seem that grim anymore, either.
Of course, if Mariano Rivera's right forearm isn't all right, then all bets
are off. But Rivera, on the way back from a strained forearm muscle, threw a
very encouraging bullpen session on Saturday. Rivera has always been the
answer, not the question for this operation. If he is whole and in form, the
ninth inning can be business as usual for the Yankees.
The earlier questions with the pitching revolved around the starting
rotation. This situation has evolved all the way from shaky to adequate. And
with the Yankees' offense, first in runs scored in the Majors, competent
pitching may be all that is required.
The classic example is Randy Johnson, who is a 17-game winner. Johnson's
earned run average is 4.93. That number generally doesn't lead directly to 17
victories, but the Yankees have scored 6.5 runs per game in his 32 starts.
Johnson is no longer a dominant pitcher, but he has been 6-1 since the
beginning of August.
In the second half of the season, the Yankees have generally had three
starters pitching capably. This would meet the minimum requirement for
postseason success. Chien-Ming Wang is 17-6 with a 3.64 ERA and with his
sinker working, he is a groundball-inducing machine. Mike Mussina, when
healthy, has been his typically reliable self, 14-6, with a 3.59 ERA.
Plus, Jaret Wright has recently demonstrated signs of returning to his best
form, giving himself a shot at the fourth spot in the postseason rotation.
The Yankees starting pitching is generally trending upward which is the only
direction you can have in September if you're expecting results in October.
On the other hand, this is still far from a lockdown rotation. You were
reminded on Saturday that these gentlemen in question are often not exactly
Johan Santana at this juncture. Wang was the losing pitcher in the first game
of the day-night doubleheader against the Boston Red Sox. He had nothing like
his usual command. But he at least kept the Yankees in the contest, leaving
the game left the game trailing only 3-2.
"That's a really good sign," Yankees manager Joe Torre said. "For someone
we've come to count on so often, yet when it's hard for him and he has to
work at what he's doing, he still manages to keep you in the game. It's hard
to believe he's had the limited experience he's had."
Johnson started the nightcap for the Yankees and worked through the first
five innings with variable success, breezing through the first two innings,
laboring intermittently after that. But in the sixth he was removed after
yielding a two-run double to Coco Crisp, whom he had previously struck out
three times. The Yankees trailed, 5-3, at that point, but they rallied for a
7-5 win.
"He was fine at the beginning, but then he left some sliders in the middle of
the plate," Torre said. "That's what Crisp hit."
"I got hurt by my slider today," Johnson said. "From that standpoint, it's
disappointing. But we battled back and it was a good win. It's been a long
day for everybody, except for me."
Johnson smiled a bit when he uttered that last phrase. It was a
self-deprecating, almost whimsical thing to say. So at last glance Saturday
night, Johnson's slider was erratic, but his sense of humor had some staying
power.
This game again illustrated the point that with the Yankee offense, brilliant
pitching is not absolutely required. If the Yankee starter can just avoid
being shelled, things can often work out for the best.
If the Yankees win in the postseason they may have to go against the
conventional model, which simply indicates that the team with the best
pitching will prevail. But the Yankee offense is so powerful, yet so
versatile, that it may defeat both the conventional model and the
conventional wisdom.
And the starting pitching is now at least competent enough that the Yankees
can fairly contemplate some reasonable postseason options. Torre was asked
Saturday about which pitcher might draw the honor of a Game 1 start in the
postseason and he responded:
"Let's put it this way; [Wang], Moose and Randy, I trust them all.
Emotionally, I trust them and stuff-wise, I trust them. If we get to the
point where we have to make that decision, we'll look at some things to help
us make that decision. It's tough to choose one that isn't qualified."
With an 11 1/2 game lead and 15 games left, the Yankees will get to the point
where they have to make that decision. And they will get there knowing that,
while their starting pitching is nothing like the leading edge of this
ballclub, it is not a glaring weakness, either.
