Wang is a master of the sinkerballer. He led the Yankees with 19 wins, tying
Minnesota ace Johan Santana for the American League lead. The Taiwanese
right-hander has the best groundball/fly ball ratio in the AL. This will be
his second career postseason start. He allowed four runs (one earned) in 6
2/3 innings during Game 2 of last year's ALDS against Los Angeles.

To have success against him, the Tigers need to show more patience than they
have in most games this season. They need to work deep counts, force Wang to
throw a lot of pitches and pulverize any mistakes that he might make.

By some measures, he has been the Tigers' most consistent pitcher this
season. He leads the team in quality starts (20), and his 3.84 ERA was the
AL's 12th-best. He has established new big-league career bests in wins, ERA
and innings pitched. He attacks hitters and is a fierce competitor.

He might not have the name recognition of the other starters in Detroit's
postseason rotation, but he seems to be a good choice to start the series
opener. He stumbled in his last start, but should respond with a strong
outing on the national stage in his postseason debut.

KEY MATCHUP: Nate Robertson vs. Yankees’ southpaws

As a left-hander, Robertson is set up to succeed against the Yankees’
 left-heavy lineup (Johnny Damon, Bobby Abreu, Jason Giambi, Hideki Matsui
and Robinson Cano). Yet, some of those left-handed hitters have had success
against him. Giambi, left, is a lifetime .600 hitter (6-for-10) against
Robertson. Damon is hitting .471 (8-for-17). Robertson will need to
neutralize them to succeed.
