Stoic Wang only fears pitches by reporters

New York — He looked so much more like a young pitcher overwhelmed by the
responsibility of his new No. 1 starter status than a 19-game winner, so the
question had to be asked:
Was Chien-Ming Wang — about to take the ball against Detroit to begin the
American League Division Series — nervous?
Wang paused, then leaned toward the microphone with a timidity his teammates
haven't often seen.
Then he revealed the truth.
"In the field — no," Wang said. "In here — yes."
And every reporter in the room laughed as the pitcher from Taiwan confessed
his biggest struggle as a big-leaguer has been speaking and understanding
English without a translator.
Other than that ...
"He's unflappable," said Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter, so often known as the
king of cool this time of year.
So, any signs of nervousness were quickly dismissed for Wang, who long ago
proved himself to his teammates and coaches. While Wang's status as a No. 1
starter over a veteran like Mike Mussina might seem surprising on the
surface, anyone who watched him along the way to a 19-6 record and 3.63 ERA
wouldn't be fazed.
As early as midseason, pitching coach Ron Guidry had declared Wang as good as
any pitcher on the Yankees' staff and acknowledged the 26-year-old righty had
learned to thrive under pressure.
"He knows what he means to this team when before he was just a young pitcher
last year," Guidry said.
As much as he meant to the team, Wang admitted he was "surprised coming into
the playoffs that I am the first pitcher."
But, just like the folks who have watched him for most of this season, the
pitcher figured out the simple answer and drew another laugh when he was
asked why he got the ball.
"(I) keep pitching good games," he said.
