MLB PLAYOFFS 2006
The Scouting Report
October 3, 2006

Scouting the Yankees
From a talent evaluator for an American League East team:
Who is the hitter you fear the most in a big situation?
Derek Jeter. When you need a base hit to win a ballgame, or a walk to get you
on, he's the guy you want up there.
Who is the pitcher you fear the most in a big situation?
Mariano Rivera. He would have to rank ahead of any of their starters.
Which player is most likely to surprise?
Johnny Damon. He seems to always come through in the big moments.
Which player is most likely to disappoint?
Gary Sheffield. It seems like his timing is off at the plate.
How do you rate the bullpen?
I think it's a plus. You have the luxury of Mariano, who can pitch more than
an inning if you need it, even if you'd rather not do that. I've been pretty
impressed with Scott Proctor. Mike Myers seems to get the job done.
Is the manager an asset, an albatross or zero factor?
An asset.
How do you rate the team's chances of going all the way?
I don't see anyone beating them.
Who is one "under-the-radar" player who could impact the series?
Jorge Posada. He comes through with big hits, whether it's a bloop hit, a
line drive or a home run.
How will the home ballpark factor into the series?
Teams come in there for the postseason and it's a completely different crowd.
A lot of players come in there and have never played in those conditions. The
Yankees have had many good games in Yankee Stadium, and the crowd plays into
it a lot. On the field, the Yankees benefit from knowing how to play
leftfield and rightfield, how to play the ball off a carom, how deep it is to
left-center and right-centerfield and how the ball carries to
right-centerfield.
Weird, wild stuff:
Bobby Abreu hit .281 (36-for-128) with two strikes after coming to the
Yankees.

Scouting the Tigers
From a coach for an American League Central team:
Who is the hitter you fear the most in a big situation? Ivan Rodriguez,
because of the fact that he has the ability to shorten his swing and put the
ball in play, and he can hit the ball to the right side. He's been in big
situations before.
Who is the pitcher you fear the most in a big situation? Justin Verlander.
His stuff is as good as anybody's in baseball when he's on. He's got command
of four pitches, and his fastball runs from 95 mph to 100.
Which player is most likely to surprise? Brandon Inge. He is a freaky good
athlete. Defensively, he is as close to being a Gold Glove as you can be. He
can change a game defensively. And he hits ninth and has got 27 homers.
Which player is most likely to disappoint? Magglio Ordonez. He's a veteran
guy, and I don't know what kind of pressure he's going to put on himself. I
think he can be pitched to. He has holes that can be exposed.
How do you rate the bullpen? It's not as good as Minnesota's, but it's a
plus. Todd Jones is a strike-thrower. Joel Zumaya and Fernando Rodney both
throw hard. That's going to be the key, if those guys can bridge the gap from
the young starters to Jones.
Is the manager an asset, an albatross or zero factor? Jim Leyland is an
unbelievable asset. They're a different club because of the way he handles
things. He's had a major impact on that team.
Who is one under-the-radar player who could impact the series? Marcus Thames.
He's interesting because he's an ex-Yankee. He's had a good year, but he
hasn't played very much lately.
How will the home ballpark (Comerica Park) factor into the series? The park
plays so big in centerfield, and it's going to play even bigger as it gets
colder. It could actually play into the Tigers' hands.
How do you rate the team's chances of going all the way? I have trouble
seeing it because of the fact they haven't played well as of late, and
because of the fact that both New York and Minnesota have played so well
lately.
